Please Help - Motu Ultralight Line Level Inputs

Post by Creature_1977 »

I want to use the rear analog inputs of the Ultralite to input my guitar and bass (since I am using ports 1 & 2 for XLR/Mic connections).

I ordered the Zbox not realizing I actually need a preamp. Will a passive mixer (like the one linked below) work?

So is it - Zbox, DI to Ultralite?

If you are connecting an electric guitar or bass to the Zbox, you do not need a mic preamp or a DI box. Connect the Zbox directly to the UltraLite's analog line inputs.

I originally thought the same thing, but no. MOTU says "The ZBox is an impedance adapter. It is not a pre amp. the ZBox will provide the correct impedance to connect the guitar to the rear panel TRS inputs on the UltraLite. However, those inputs are designed for line level. A passive guitar would provide a very weak signal. You will need a pre amp to change the passive guitar output level into a line level signal."

Strange. Now I have to decide if I will be running guitar or vocals through a mixer and into the line level inputs....UGH...compromise. :x

The analog line inputs on the back of the UltraLite, UltraLite mk3, and UltraLite mk3 Hybrid feature an input trim that can add up to 22 dB of gain. I have an Ibanez electric guitar with passive pick-ups plugged into a Zbox that is connected to one of the back panel analog inputs on an UltraLite mk3 Hybrid, and I can get a sufficient input level with the input trim turned up. No additional pre-amp is required.

Thanks for adding this information. I'm guessing this is where Cuemix comes in? I am so happy to hear this! Thank you!

The input trims can be controlled from the front panel or by the CueMix FX program.
