Moved to DP, have workflow question

Post by SteveInChicago »

Hi all,

I am learning DP, by basically throwing myself into it. Things are moving along peaceably.

Here's my problem--

I am working on a dance piece. No, no, that's not the problem. :P

I meet with the choreographer and we watch video of past performances of this work-in-progress in Cubase 5. Cubase permits cutting and pasting of video (though not exporting, saving or otherwise manipulating.) When the choreographer wants to insert or remove some time I make the corresponding edit in Cubase and play it back for her with the video. This confirms the edit and that we have both understood the same thing. I later can use these very rough looking edits to remind me of what to do, in addition to my my notes, of course.

This video cut/paste is not possible in DP, so my question is, can any of you recommend software that will enable me to insert or delete time in a video, then render it to disk so I can bring it into DP?

I tried to use MPEG streamclip to slice things up and then use multiple sequences in DP for each video clip, but this seemed too cumbersome, but that impression might have come from my lack of familiarity with DP.

Any suggestions on how to replace my old workflow with something that gets a similar result would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Steve

For basic cut, trim or paste you can just use QuickTime 7 Pro (not QuickTime Player 10 from SnowLeopard). Actually QuickTime 7 Pro does a lot more than just that, a look at its help doc is rewarding.

QuickTime 7 is not the default player in Snow Leopard but should be included in your installation DVD. Just buy the Pro key in the Apple store.

+1 for Quicktime 7 Pro (I think the Pro version is free in SL)- very easy to cut for simple edits. YOu could also probably use iMovie as well.

Another +1 on Quick Time Pro.

I mean, you could also do it in iMovie, but it's slow, and you need to do too many steps. Boring...
OTOH, trimming video in QT Pro is as easy as selecting a range and hitting the Delete key. Save it and recall this new version in DP, and you are ready to continue working.

Excellent, QT pro 7 did it. You can even move frame by frame with right and left arrow keys.

Yeah I tried imovie once or 10 times, not fun.

Thanks guys!

I guess I'm late to the party, but yes, QT Pro always was my quick-and-dirty video editor.

Quick time pro is very cost effective, I like FCP, you can export and XML between DP and FCP.
