audio dropouts during recording

Post by JacoMOTU »

I've been trying to record live w/ 16 channels using 2- 8 Pre's in DP 5.13.
Intermittently I'm getting audio drop outs through one of the units, for about 3 sec.
It's the master unit i believe.
I have them daisy chained through Firewire 400 recording on an external HD (OWC Seagate 7200 through Firewire 800). I've tried different drives and different cable's.
Even went through the scenario w/ MOTU. This machine and the drives should handle this.
What gives?

I'm using MacBook Pro 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 gigs RAM
Thanks, Tom

Make sure those 8pre boxes are both selected in your DP hardware setup.

Run the highest buffer you can. Also accessed in DP hardware setup.

Get a FireWire express 34 card and stick it in your laptop. Get the hard drive and the MOTUs off the same buss.

Get an app that shows your CPU and ram status in the osx menu bar. Doing an extended 16trk recording eats a lot of RAM and things will go downhill if you can't monitor it. I think the one I use is Menu Meters.
