running mac & windows drivers on the same computer

Post by steve_56 »

I have not actually done this yet, so I figured better to ask before I got in trouble.

I have a Macbook Pro running 10.5.8, A MIDI Timepiece AV and a 828MK3. I run a bunch of music apps and everything works fine. I also have "Parallels Desktop" installed running Windows XP on the same mac.

Up till now I have not used any music programs while running Windows, so I have not installed any windows drivers for the MOTU stuff. However, I just found a music app that I would like to set up and play around with while running Windows.

Before I go ahead and install all the PC drivers I just wanted to check and see if that will screw up all my Mac settings and hardware settings. While at the MOTU download pages I did notice that there was a firmware upgrade for Windows as well. Did not like the looks of that. I'm thinking that attempting to install all this windows stuff is asking for trouble. So I need a little convincing before I take the plunge.

Anyone attempt this? Can everything live together?

Thank for any info.

Proton :)

I may be wrong but I think the Windows drivers would go on the Windows partition so it should not be a problem. If you are running them at the same time it may be; that is a good question Steve.

I believe that if you try to do Win and Mac at the same time you are going to have problems. Core Audio needs to be set up to run one way or another.

Or maybe there is a solution. If so, you may have to be the pioneer, figure it all out and let us know how it all works.

Frankly, why anyone would want to do it in Windows when the same machine runs the Mac OS is beyond me.

I called MOTU and they said that running both sets of drivers will not do any harm. The worst thing that can happen is that it would not work. I'm not sure I believe this since some of these tech support guys don't have a clue. I think installing that firmware upgrade that is part of the PC audio drivers is asking for trouble. In any case, they do not guarantee it will work on Parallels Desktop or any similar type software.

Duh....the PC program that I want to use will not run on the Mac! If it did I would not be here. :)

I have not gotten around to trying this yet, but what I'll probably do is just install the PC MIDI drivers and use my Macs internal audio. This way I don't have to mess around with the windows audio drivers. Will check back after I've tried it.

What pc-only program are you trying to run on your Mac?
Also which unit needs the firmware update? If it's the MTP AV USB I'd like to know as I use them on separate Mac and pc machines.
Either way around Parallels is not the best way to run pc programs on a Mac. Go Bootcamp as you still would need to load Windoze in either case. Parallels is just a shell that runs on top of OSX for it to host Windoze. You'll get better audio performance the Bootcamp way.
