adriano wrote:Hello forum,

OK, here is what's going on and I'll try to be as detailed as possible.

Since I started with DP 4.0 up to DP 7.12, when I start a project (this is for MIDI file projects only), I name the project with the title of the song and the .mid ext, like this: SONGTITLE.MID
When I'm done for the day, I save it as SONGTITLE.MID, but as a "Digital Performer Project Document" and I keep saving it that way until, it is finished then, when it's completed, I only have to Save As/Export as an actual MIDI file without me having to add the .MID at the end of the title. Yes! Call me lazy

Well, the files that DP 7.22 wont open, are the "Digital Performer Project Document" with the ".MID" at the end. So, what I did, I opened a few of them with DP 7.12 and re-saved them without the ".MID" and now DP 7.22 sees and opens those files without any issues, nothing is missing. About that?

I wonder if MOTU has made this change on purpose for a good reason or it's a bug.

Now, is there an easier way to convert those files one shut or I'll have to go through them 1 by 1?

Other then that, 7.22 seems much faster, even at start-up.

Thank you,
Adriano
Apparently Digital Performer v7.22 is checking the file type extension first when deciding whether it can open a file. So it will try to open any file with a .mid extension as a MIDI file even if the data in that file is a Digital Performer project file. That's why you had this problem. Old versions of Digital Performer checked the HFS file type and creator metadata first when determining file types, but the file type and creator metadata are deprecated in Mac OS X v10.6. So it makes sense that MOTU would do this, although it is easier to "shoot yourself in the foot."

Well, I still have 3 files DP refuses to open. I have some VI's in them and on occasion I have had DP 7.21 crash while trying to open them. A log out/log on or reboot usually solved that but 7.22 just won't do anything with them. Other than those 3 files, all my other files I have opened with 7.22 have been fine. Repairing permissions and all that other stuff does not help. And no, the Load command won't work either.

Hi 1nput0utput,

Yes you're right. I was searching for an app last night to check for file Type and Creator and in one of the links suggested by google I read that this was depricated.

Thanks though for making it a clearer explanation. Now it makes total sense to me.

Hello Hammerman and sorry about your issue.

I'm assuming you read my solution for regarding the problem I had .

If you've had problems sometimes opening them with the previous version, could it be some VI comparability issue?

Maybe someone with more knowledge than me could pitch in. Is there a way to disable those VIs like you can with the stock plugins?

Remove the plugs from the folder and then DP won't find them to load... other than that, you MUST open the project and disable the plug.

I believe you can do this by holding down the OPTION key when booting. It will bring up the plugin list, and you can choose which plugins/VI's to disable or enable before going on and booting DP and loading the file.

I'm late to the party this time, folks. I just installed DP 7.22 last night, and have not had much time to use it yet. What little I've experimented with it so far has been both encouraging and discouraging. DP 7.22 fixes some corruption problems I was getting in version 7.21, but it won't open some files at all. These tend to be recent files; old files open fine.

I can't be very specific yet, but as I learn what's going on and (I hope) how to fix it, I'll post what I learn in the forums. Meanwhile, I hope others are figuring out the patterns by now, and will be doing likewise.

From what I understand MacOS is moving away from resource forks and file type and creator and relying on filename extensions. Adriano-- you should try appending ".perf" or ".prf" to the end of your project files that aren't opening and then see if that works.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Unfortunately with all plug-ins disabled (ALL OF THEM), the projects STILL won't open. And I've been with DP since version 2! I've never seen this behavior before. That said, it's not a big deal as they open fine in 7.21.

Perhaps you should send one of those files to MOTU. Maybe they can tell you what the problem is.

Hello forum. Hello James,

I have not converted all those 200+ files yet because I don't need them at this very moment, but you sure nailed it.
I appended the ".perf" at the end of 12 files and the files have automatically re-acquired the DP icon and DP 7.22 opens them without any issues.

It surely is much easier appending the extensions than to open all of them in 7.21, re-save and then use 7.22.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I just returned after a short trip and was somewhat surprised to see all the responses. Still... there appear to be no solutions to a standard project that opened last week in DP 7.21 and won't this week in 7.22. What a difference a digit can make. I think that's plain crazy.

I've tried everything I know including repairing disk permissions with Disk Utility, examining permissions on the project file, running Disk Warrior on the external HD containing the project files AND the computer, copying the project files to the desktop, attempting to LOAD chunks from a project in to a new project created in 7.22, creating a new user and running DP form there and even installing a fresh OS (10.6.5) and DP 7.2 plus the update to 7.22 on an external FW HD. NADA!

The day I posted the first message here on the Nation I also submitted a tech request to MOTU. 4 days later and not a peep from them.

Very frustrating. I've trashed 7.22 for now.

Did you try the file extension change?

Yes. Both. 7.22 just sat there. Though thanks for staying on things James.

Even if that did work who would be happy having to manually add file extensions to their DP projects when even the simplest Mac application can ID and open files it created.

Can you start a "New" file in DP 7.22? And if so, have you tried using
"Load" to then load an older project?

This is all mysterious. I'm having absolutely no issues at all opening
older projects, whether they're last week's, or from a year ago.

Well there are utilities that allow you to rename files easily. Also keep on mind that this issue isn't affecting mist people and I'd be willing to bet it never came up during MOTU's beta testing or they wouldn't have released it. Any chance you can post a project file?
