Genelec 1032 for small room?

Post by zaratero »

I have a question and I ask for your thoughts here, thanks in advance for any comment.

My room is 11 X 14 feet. Small, but I´ll be pretty clean and empty, just a desk (no racks,....)
I have a brilliant offer for a 5.1 setup in good condition (5 X Genelec 1032 + Genelec 7071). I mean a REALLY good offer.

I planned to go with a smaller 5.1 setup, but it´s a great purchase money wise (I will most surely be able to resell for the same price after a while if I don´t like them), and I wonder what pitfalls can you see in too big a monitor in this kind of room. I´ve been reading Genelec guidelines and they don´t mention any trouble in oversizing, only benefits regarding distortion and headroom.

On a side note, I learned my way in sound doing live gigs (that´s what fed me for ten years and paid for the studio tools) it´s only this last couple of years that I´ve been getting more seriously into the studio thing. One of my biggest "whatheheck" while mixing is that I´m used to have a big "room" (or not room at all) around me, and my monitors (PA) quite far for a massive audiofield. Nearfields tend to unfocus me and when I´ve had the chance to mix in bigger systems my mixes translated better, even though I don´t monitor at high SPLs. This makes me think I could benefit from a 1032 system hanged up the wall over of the TV screen for a longer distance between head and monitors.

The room is still being built and it will be used for very different applications, mainly sound for picture, I´d like to be able to get my mixes done there and then take them to a Dolby theater for a "quick" fix and transfer.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

I have used a similar setup in a smallish mix room, 1032s for L,C,R, and 1031s for the rears.

It did sound quite good, but was difficult to get the correct spacing. I think the system was a little too heavy for the space.

My home setup uses 5 x 1029s, and while the room again is not ideal, the scale of the system for the size of the room seems about right.

Still the 1032s are great speakers, so as long as you can balance and EQ the system they should be good. Get a good monitor controller. Experimentation with the sub position will be crucial.

Cheers

Thanks for your comments Stephen, and sorry for such a late reply.
I think I´m going to skip this one. My intention was to buy a JBL LSR 4328/4326/4312 surround setup and flush mount it in the new room. The JBL system would be 4000€ and the second hand 1032s and 7071 would around 6500€.
*I get Speaker alignment, Room correction, a remote, calibration and presets inside the JBLs through ethernet.
*The genelecs will be difficult to flush mount because I´ll have to tilt them a lot as well...
*JBL (or KCS, which are plain copies of JBLs) is on EVERY cinema here in Spain, so that´s another point to consider.

Then I´m spending so much money lately, that I have to cut back somewhere.
:shake:

Then your post about the 1029s reminded me that I wasn´t such a fan of Genelec when I owned a pair of 1029s. I bought them 12 years ago and recorded a couple of bands during the couple of years I owned them. After that I sold them and bought Dynaudio.
I´ve nearly convinced myself that I don´t need those 1032s... thanks for the mirror therapy... :D

No Problem.... 1029s really don't work for me as a pair, not great.... they do work well for me with my current surround setup with a sub.... I actually have 2 centre speakers.... one below and one above the screen in parallel...... all balanced nicely.... but I do emphasise this only works for my 5.1 setup.... for stereo I still can't beat my 1031s!!!

Cheers
