Is it possible to connect PS3 to 828 mkIII?

I haven't actually made the connection yet but I was hoping someone already tried this combination already here on this list. Does it work? If so, please provide step by step instructions. Thank you. By the way, for those who may not know the PS3 provides s/pdif connections.

No. The PS3, like most all other entertainment devices, spits out an encoded single stream signal that is decoded by the surround receiver ont he other end.

The 828 can only send and receive ADAT Optical or TOSLink (depending on the model) which provide discrete audio channels.

What about with the mac pro optical connections?

Okay this setup wont work but what about connecting the PS3 via s/pdif to the mac pro first and then coming out to the 828mkIII could that possibly work?

Actually, I think the PS3 might offer the ability to output a PCM stream over Optical which would allow you to output discrete channels. Try digging through the menus to see if it's possible.

One caveat - I'm not sure if it includes a clock signal or not.

I have a DVD player which has six analog outputs for discrete surround outs, and coax/optical digital outputs for encoded surround; you can change the digital outputs to be PCM rather than encoded, but they will be stereo only rather than surround. I don't have a PS3 to say if it's the same, but I wouldn't be surprised. I think manufacturers (of consumer devices) tend to shy away from full-quality multi-channel digital outputs, presumably because of piracy fears.

I'm not in any position to test this out, but maybe the OP can give it a swirl-a-whirl and let us know if it's great success or utter failure.
