L.A.M.E 3.98.4?
Hello forum,
Anyone using LAME 3.98.4 with DP?
Here is the link to it http://www.rarewares.org/index.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
If yes, which one do I download and how to install it.
Currently I'm using version 3.97 and this is an installer package version.
Thank you,
Adriano

That software appears to be for Windows.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.

Hi 1nput0utput,
It showed up in a search on macupdate:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/18882/lame" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and one of the user comments states that are Intel and Universal LAME binaries.

There's only one file to download:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/lame/files/
... and it contains installers/files for all platforms, including Carbon, Intel, Linux and Windoze. I just downloaded it myself to confirm. Download the .zip file, unzip and follow the instructions for your system.

Hi Armageddon and thank you for the reply.
I just downloaded lame 3.98.4 and I'm seeing only source code files. Does it mean I have to compile it first? Ouch!
I also don't see an installer for Mac just source code files in the Mac folder.
Thanks again,
Adriano

Re: L.A.M.E 3.98.4?
From what I can see, if you download that 3.98.4 tarball, then you have to build it, which means you need Xcode installed. Then you can build it, but from what I could find so far, it only builds the command line version of lame, not the Lame.Framework, which is what is needed by DP.
DP itself points you to a google search which pulls up a compiled Lame.Framework of 3.97, which works fine here, just use that unless there is some specific reason you think you need the newer version of lame. Or maybe you can figure out how to build the Lame.Framework, if so please let us know.

Re: L.A.M.E 3.98.4?
I have downloaded 3.97 a few times with no luck. I am running DP6 on a new iMac with intels.
When I open the LAME file it opens up Terminal and gives me the following error:
"Downloads/LAME.framework/Versions/A/LAME: cannot execute binary file
logout
[Process completed]"
What am I doing wrong? I dont remember having a problem when I installed it on a Mac PowerPC

Re: L.A.M.E 3.98.4?
I would also love to know how and where to install this. I don't seem to be having any luck bouncing down to an MP3 file. I have to resort to iTunes to do it. Not the end of the world of course but it would be nice to do it in DP

Re: L.A.M.E 3.98.4?
Question: what's wrong with the current version we all use? Did the Open Source boys working on L.A.M.E. just discover the magic codec that turns mp3 into HD? Don't get me wrong; I'm always for progress, but where is the incentive to compile all this stuff?
This can be done from the terminal, but I don't know how. I used to get my son to do that, who is a UNIX buff and is a top-notch programmer. Maybe someone here can tell you. I'll be staying with the current version. (now previous, I guess) At least until someone else comes up with an installer that does it all.

Re: L.A.M.E 3.98.4?
I've been using 3.97 successfully for a while on my main studio daw with 10.5.8. However I recently installed this on my MBP with 10.6.5 and when I tried to bounce a mp3 in DP7.21 I get a window telling me lame is not installed . I go to the link that DP sends me to for Lame. Reinstall lame framework 3.97 , seems to go smoothly, I quit DP and reboot and the same thing . I've done this several times installing. Anyone with ideas why this install isn't working or where I should be looking for files to see if things are installed correctly?
craig
edit :
Never mind , I just downloaded the 3.97 version that tomrabbit posted and it worked fine . The installer looks different than the 3.97 installer version that DP pointed me to when it helped me look for it, and that one did not work after installing Lame several times .

Re: L.A.M.E 3.98.4?
Not a real biggie but curious.
I needed LAME to save a transposed file from Amazing Slow Downer and got the error message that LAME wasn't installed.
I, too, followed the tomrabbit link and installed 3.97.
Rebooted.
Amazing Slow Downer now allows the save as MP3 option, but within DP, I now don't have the option of saving as an MP3...everything but. (Of course, I couldn't save as an MP3 before...I'd get the "help me locate", etc.)
As mentioned, just curious.
I don't really need DP to save as an MP3, but it seems to be another pesky "gnat".

Re: L.A.M.E 3.98.4?
My little LAME 3.98.4 saga is lame, indeed.
I was running DP 5.13 under Tiger and using LAME 3.97, which I'd gotten from kjams.com as a Mac installer that put the framework and a QuickTime component where they needed to be. MP3 creation with DP was always very simple with this via the Bounce function.
I recently decided to upgrade to Snow Leopard and DP 7. Got the OS up over the weekend and DP 7.23 installed yesterday, followed by immediate upgrade to 7.24. I looked in there to see what came up for bouncing, and the LAME MP3 item was still there, so i selected it out of curiosity, but it said the framework wasn't there. Puzzled why DP would still even have the item there, but so be it.
I'd researched what to do about LAME and had found a number of options for 3.98 for Mac, including:
Two from http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundle.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;:
--LAME 3.98.4 for OSX 64 bits (Snow Leopard) compiled by Olivier Petit -- lame3.98.4_OSX_64b.zip -- when I unzipped it, it was just called "lame" with no extension, and it had an icon I'd never seen before, so I had no idea what to do with it.
--LAME 3.98.2 for MacOS X compiled by Paul Sanders -- lame_3.98.2.dmg -- when I opened the disk image, I saw only html files and a .dylib file, and the html making reference to command lines, so this also didn't seem to be what I needed.
At http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Lame_Mac.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; was Paul Sanders' work as well, with several versions at http://www.free-codecs.com/Lame_Mac_download.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; -- I downloaded Lame 3.98.4 for Mac OS because I figured why not go with the latest version that says 64-bit. I was glad to see lame-3.98.4.pkg open with an installer. But after installing, DP still came up with the same thing -- LAME still in the list of options but saying the framework wasn't there. I took a closer look at the installer and saw a big list of files it said it was adding to the system, none of which turned out to have a .framework extension. Since things weren't working, I tried to look for these files but can't for the life of me find them. So that's lame, since one of the main points of this whole OS upgrade was to have a clean system with everything freshly installed.
I looked back at the first thing I mentioned above, and got info, and I could swear it said it was a folder, so I double-clicked to see what was inside. Yikes, it opened Terminal and seemed to run something. There was some kind of error message, but it also said Process Completed, so I have no idea at all what this may have done to my system. And now, of course, when I get info, it says it's a Unix Executable File (Intel). Ugh.
Though there were two other options for 3.98 at the free-codecs page and some other things coming up in Google, I was sick of trying these new things at this point. I got out the old 3.97 installer -- which, by the way, can be found at https://karaoke.kjams.com/wiki/Lame" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; under the Mac section -- and after installation DP was back up and running with it just as before. So at least that's a relief.
It would sure be nice, though, to 1) know how one might actually use any of the 3.98 versions with DP, especially the 64-bit, and 2) how I can clean up my system from whatever these two 3.98s may have done to it that DP isn't using.
