Interesting new DAC/pre-amp/monitor controller from Drawmer

Post by mhschmieder »

Just announced today, this new product from Drawmer may be the first to combine the function of D/A, pre-amp, and multi-monitor/multi-headphone controller all in one unit:

http://www.sonicstate.com/news/2010/10/ ... r-pre-amp/

It sounds like they have taken an innovative design approach. Most important, though, may be the quality of the D/A converters.

Thanks for posting this info. It's something I'm very much interested in, as my DAC-1 has been a bit shaky lately and I need more source inputs.

You can get a closer look here: http://www.drawmer.com/products/monitor ... mp-dac.php The links on the right gives you a closeup.

Cool! I've printed out all the docs and user manuals so I can study them and compare to other gear, and also to prep questions for AES in November.

I had planned on buying the Mytek DA96 to complement my Mytek AD96, but this new Drawmer unit could be a game-changer.

I hope we see reviews soon, regarding the quality of the D/A converters.

If you wouldn't mind, please let me know what you find out. I'll be keeping a lookout for info, too, and I'll pass it along if anything new comes out.

Thanks!

Hello All,
Kieron here from Drawmer, if you have any specific questions regarding the HQ, please PM me. I check my mails more often than all the forums! The first review has been published in Pro Sound News, September edition, available online in electronic format, or I have a pdf if anyone is interested.

Best Regards, Kieron.

Is this the review you are referring to?:

http://www.prosoundweb.com/article/draw ... e_amp_dac/

Nevermind; that's just a product announcement, not a review. Here's the main site for Pro Sound News (not to be confused with Pro Sound Web):

http://www.prosoundnews.com/

I couldn't find the review at that site, or PDF's of recent issues, but didn't spend a whole lot of time looking.

Chances are high that we have a copy of the September issue at the front desk, so I'll take a look soon. It's one of the major periodicals that we subscribe to.

Hello Again,
Sorry for not being clearer, the review was in Pro Sound News Europe, and has just been taken down and replaced by the October issue. I will send the PDF out to Dan who can share it elsewhere.
Regards, Kieron.

Wow, this thing is HUGE -- two rack units, full width, and with feet for hi-fi stereo rack or table top usage.

I didn't get a chance to hear it, as it took me so long to find Drawmer (since they were combined with other brands and their logo was somewhat obscured) that the show was starting to wrap up and people were starting to pack.

Hello,
The unit also ships with rack ears, you just remove which ever you don't need.

Another review is just out in Resolution magazine, but it is currently only available in hard copy.

There are also a couple more photos anda couple of performance graphs on our facebook page,
Regards, Kieron.

I meant to ask, given the size: is this tube-based (aka valve-based for our friends in the U.K.)?

Hello,
The HQ is not a valve design, for the final critical listening we wanted clean, to give an as accurate as possible representation of what was recorded. A little more information on how it works has just been posted here:

http://www.prosoundnewseurope.com/main- ... calling-hq" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As far as we know, this type of volume control is a first, and even if I say so myself, works extremely well!
Regards, Kieron.
