MOTU Longevity & Hello
Hello All,
Firstly, I'm new here and wanted to say hello.
Second, I was interested in getting some MOTU opinions.
In 2000, I purchased my first MOTU device. (24i with a PCI324)
I was never overly impressed with it as a sole device. Although somehow I doubt that was ever it's intent. At any rate, not much later I ended up going to a Layla24. I was thrilled and it lasted me the last 10 years. Tech support was great and had frequent driver updates.
Well now I've decided to go back to MOTU. I purchased an 896MK3 and have had to send it back to the store twice. The first was due to an inoperative display and the 2nd was a mute headphone jack. Now I have a third that is intermittently losing communication with my PC.
I suppose what I'm asking is, Is MOTU what they used to be? Am I just having really bad luck or is there a hidden issue as of late? I was really excited about this card as I felt it was quite the upgrade. The pre's even sound noticably better, smoother.. when everything is working.
So I ask, what is your experience with MOTU in recent (the plastic) years? Should I expect to get 10 years out of this as well?
Thank you in advance for your opinions and insight.

Re: MOTU Longevity & Hello
I have had my 896mk3 since May with no problems. It gets used at least once weekly in my studio and survived a few weeks of heavy location performance and recording during the summer. This was been with two different computers, too.
Sorry to hear about your luck of the draw...!

Thanks for the reply JP
I hate coming on to a new forum complaining from the word "go".
That is good to hear. I guess I'll go for number 4 and keep my fingers crossed.
I'm half tempted to contact MOTU direct and have them replace the unit rather than going back to the store. I just wonder if somehow they got a bad batch or had somethin happen in the wharehouse these were in.
hmmmmm
Thanks again

Re: MOTU Longevity & Hello
Thanks for the welcome Monkey Man. I've contacted the store and they are sending another replacement. With any luck, all will be well. If not, I'm going to let MOTU do the next one.
Thanks,

Re: MOTU Longevity & Hello
Okay,
I'm on unit 4 -lol
Everything appears to be working well. My question is this... How do I do a diagnostic test? It seems I saw something somewhere about doing a self test on the 896MK3.
I just want to be 100% certain all is well after my last occurrences.
Thank you in advance for any help you may be.

Re: MOTU Longevity & Hello
I'm curious about something - do they still include the disclaimer "be careful not to plug the firewire cable in reverse?" Because if the ports are done right it is IMPOSSIBLE to plug the cable in reverse. What i saw on this Traveler Mk2 i have in for repair, was wrong, wrong, wrong. And it was fixed with just a blob of solder. If it were soldered in the first place i wouldn't have had to repair it.
If they're still NOT securing the port shields properly, this is incompetence.
