Setup/linking two (2) 896mk3 units

Post by swannjam »

Recently purchased two 896mk3 units and I'm struggling to get them to link together.

Each unit appears to work fine individually. However, purchased them specifically to link together for 16-ch in and out.

The first 896mk3 is connected via fireware to PC.

The first 896mk3's optical A OUT is connected to the second 896mk3's optical A IN.

First issue:
When I change the sample rate on the first unit, the second unit doesn't follow suit, it instead flashes the 44.1 LED segment.

Second issue:
Trying some basic test routing using CueMix. I have a mic attached to the first 896mk3 analog 1 combi jack, and I'm getting signal. In Cuemix, I established a mix in which I'm attempting to route this analog source thru to an output on the second 896mk3. In the CueMix "METERS" view, it indicates that signal is going out on the "OPTICAL A" section under "OUTPUTS", yet the second 896mk3's hardware meters don't show that any signal is making it to thru.

I can't find any reference to linking two(2) 896mk3's in the manual or on-line. I did find a few references online to linking an 8pre(s) to an 896, but haven't found this provide much help.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I only have one 896mk3 so I'm not of much help but I have to ask... why two 896mk3s? Why not just one and add an 8-channel A/D/A unit like an 8pre, Presonus Digimax, or M-Audio Profire 2626?

It sounds like you're just using the second 896mk3 as a slave (which I'm not sure it's actually capable of doing because of the standalone DSP mixer) in which case you can do the same for a bit less money.

To your actual problem, is the second 896mk3 set to sync/clock externally?

Hi. I have 2 896 ( 1 HD and 1 mk3 ) and it works great.
1 of all, if the 1st unit is plugged FW to the computer, shouldn't it be ADAT IN from the first and ADAT Out in the 2nd?

An external clock is really recommended to sync several units. (BLA's microclock is a GREAT bang for the buck)
MacPro 8Core 2.8GHZ 16GB RAM OSX10.8.3
MacBook Pro 17" Unibody 2011 OSX10.8.3
896mk3, BLA Modded 896HD, BLA Microclock, MTP-AV, Yamaha KX-8, CME VX-7 Mackie Ctrl, megadrum, Presonus C-S,
DP8.04, Bidule, M5 3, Ethno 2, BPM 1.5 Kontakt4, BFD2, SD2, Omnisphere, Wave Arts P-S5, Altiverb7, PSP VW & OldTimer, VB3, Ivory 2 Grand, True Pianos, Ozone 5, Reason 4, AmpliTube3, Bla bla bla...
A few El & Ac basses & Guitars, Hammond A-100.

You have to have optical in and out.You hook one up first and configure it in cuemix. Bus 1 channel channel pan l left ch.2 right mute all others except master set . do for all 4 busses bus 2 being 3 and 4, 3 being 5 and 6 4 being 7&8.
