why does my cuemix look like this:

Yea.

What you have is CueMix. The image below is CueMix DSP. The difference is the latter uses low latency DSP mix processing on the 424 card.

Correct me if i'm wrong though, i'm new to MOTU gear.

It helps a lot to get to an answer faster if you can list the gear that you are running. That said, take a look at these pages from MOTU and see if they help.

but mine *is* Cuemix DSP.
it actually looks like this (except the Windows version):

i can't maximize it to full screen and all 16 inputs can only be viewed a few at a time using the horizontal scrollbar above the faders... very clunky.

i'm running 2 8pres into a dell laptop running windows 7 64-bit.

It won't maximize but you *should* be able to drag the size horizontally (grab the bottom right-hand corner) so that you can see more inputs at once.

It's CueMix for the PCI interfaces. It's a bit of a different beast.
