MOTU 24i/o has started to smell

Post by billruys »

Hi all,

I've had my 24i/o for two or three years now and never had a physical problem with it. I have it mounted in my rack along with my 2408 Mk3. I keep a rack space above and below each unit empty to ensure airflow for cooling. The rack is open front and back, so heat build-up is not an issue.

I had noticed a funky smell in my studio over the last few days. I finally got around to sniffing everything in the studio and tracked the smell down to my 24i/o. Interestingly, the 2408 has a similar smell, but it is much less intense.

So I removed my 24i/o from the rack and popped the lid off. It turns out that there are two transformers side by side (same tranny as the 2408, but two of 'em).

The both transformers are hot, but the one on the right is so hot, I can hardly touch it. It seems that the lacquer on the transformer is emitting the smell when the transformer is hot.

Is this normal for the 24i/o? I have mine with the switch in the 230V position, but here in New Zealand, I'm pretty sure we run on 240V. A minor difference like that is usually not a problem.

Anyone come across a problem like this with their 24i/o?

Contact MOTU would be my recommendation. You don't want to light your studio or yourself on fire.

Yeah, thanks. I have taken your advice and submitted a techlink. I suspect this puppy will need to be sent away for repair. I guess it will have to ship to the USA? Man, it's times like these New Zealand feels a long way away from the rest of the world :(

I hope they can sort it soon
