Mac 7300 - RIP

Post by NazRat »

Sherman set the Wayback . . . fired up the old trusty 7300 last night. Came up without a hitch after sitting for years, but unfortunately it's time to go. A lot of good memories there and some very interesting stuff I haven't visited in quite a while. Oh well . . . scavenged a couple of PCI cards, wiped the drives and into the Office Depot recycle box (a good recycle program BTW). Also jettisoned were various and sundry electronics, a PC and 2 laptops. Now I have more space to fill.

I've still have a Mac 11ci with an Audio Media card in it.
One of the worst things I've ever done was back it up wipe the disk clean and then lost the backup.
Some of the best drum samples I've ever had gone :boohoo:

Next week is clean up and painting week for me I'm thinking of taking it apart and making some kind of art work out of it.

I have an old VIC-20 collecting dust on the shelf. I have no idea why I've kept it.

I have 3 Power Computing clones in my room. 3. Each one totally modded with CPU upgrades, video cards, SCSI cards, etc. Even I can’t figure out why I have 3 of these. I keep thinking there’s a good reason why I might keep one, but no reason to keep 3.

Two G4 towers on a shelf in my garage. I also have a SE as a museum piece on my bookcase. I'm using a hotspot at a McDonalds now and there's a guy two tables over having a conversation with himself. I think I'll go home now.

I came this weekend to Junin, my born town, and I found my father finishing a work in an old 7300/180. He is editing a book for a friend of him, using Page Maker 6.5.
I think that it could be better for him make an upgrade to an iMac and get Adobe CS5, but he is happy with his old machine.

It probably works fine for what he’s doing, maybe better than going to the trouble of learning the newer machine.

I did a ton of work back in the old days in PageMaker. I think overall, it was a better product than Adobe InDesign. I'd rather work in Pagemaker any day.

I loved PageMaker. I don't even have InDesign. Adobe got so proud of their stuff that their prices outpaced any justification I could make for all except Photoshop and Illustrator, the only ones I still use. But there was a time when software was a little more reasonably priced, and I could actually use a wide variety of things. Back then, I felt empowered by a 200MHz 68040 Mac. I can't say that most apps that I use now are any faster. Just more sophisticated.

Old machines freak me out. I got rid of every old Mac as soon as the new one's settled in... In fact, seeing CRT screens anywhere with their sickly yellowing plastic enclosures gives me the willies.

That's true Bongo. Well, I'm so happy with my G5 running 10.4.11 that I am delaying the upgrade to Intel too, but my father have gone too far

Don't worry Wylie, he has an antique EZQuest CD burner. I don't remember well, but I think he use Toast 2 or 3 to make back-ups.
