Mach 5 takes a long time to load samples

Post by mweber »

I just got Mach 5, and am running it in DP 4.12 on a G4/500 with OS 10.2.8.

I'm trying to run the tutorial sounds, and it takes forever to load a sample. At first I thought the program had frozen, but it turns out it just takes a long, long time - more than 5 minutes just to change from one sample to another.

Any ideas?

I've been encountering the same thing. It didn't happen to me with the older version. It seemed to have gotten worse once disk streaming was added.

I've since loaded Mach 5 on to my PowerBook G4/1GB, and it works fine there (still in DP 4.12, but the OS is 10.3.8).

I just can't belive that this is solely a processor power or RAM issue - the difference wouldn't be that great, would it?

Anyone else run into this? Any solutions?

Hello

Where is your M5 sounds folder stored ?? Is it on an ext drive ?? Ellington, What version of the Mach five are you running ?? If you opened a new project with just MIDI track, then loaded the Tutorial sounds, does the same issue occur ??

I can get MachFive to work in DP 4.12 as well. It's DP 4.52 that's totally hosed on my end.

M5 sounds are on the same disc as Performer - a local SCSI drive. I'm running Mach5 1.2. I tried your suggestion (good idea!), but I still have the same problem - changes take minutes. I've tried adjusting the audio setup - different buffer sizes, small numbers of audio voices, etc. - but nothing seems to help.

Thanks for the suggestions, though.

Some of the patches that come with the mach 5 are very very big and complex, like the Bosendorfer piano.. they have a lot of samples that require loading and that's why they take forever to load.

If you try to load some simple patches you will find that they load fast. I could be wrong but perhaps that is what you are experiencing. try to create a patch with Mach 5 using just one sound file. It should load extremely fast.

If your loading the tutorial sounds and it takes 5 minutes something is not right. Even the large sampleslike the Bosendorfer don't take that long, maybe 30-40 secs. This on a 1.25 dual G4 in 10.3.8 with DP4.52. Perhaps it is a processor (G4-500) or ram issue if loads faster on your powerbook.

Well, here's something that might be of interest to you.

MachFive was working great on my system (G4; 1.4 gHz processor, 1.12 GB RAM,Moc OS X 10.3.8) UNTIL I updated from version 1.08 to 1.12. Since then, performance has be from slow to unusable! It is the only thing I know that will freeze the entire Mac system.

MOTU says that it may be a RAM issue, or the Sonnet processor may be to blame. Whatever it is, 1.12 DOES NOT WORK on my system.

MOTU (senior technican) says he has heard of a few cases like this but there is no work around except to use 1.08. So I am using 1.08. But if you bought 1.12 and it is slow, try to download the 1.08 version and see if that doesn't speed things up .

BTW, 1.08 does work extremely well for me. I am hoping this will all go away when I upgrade to a G5 later this year...

Yeah, certainly the tutorial sounds should load quickly. Very odd. My knee-jerk guess would be that its RAM-related, given that M5 loads these patches into RAM. But I don't know.

Same issue here. It would also lock up my system (something not many progs can do in OS X). Anyway...

I downgraded to M5 1.08 and it worded great. After moving to Tiger, installing DP 4.52 FROM THE WEBSITE UPDATE (not from the CD ROM!!!) I decided to give MachFive another chance.

1.2.2 runs great, except some instruments don't stream well (digital noise). But that is probably due to a hard drive issue as most instruments DO stream well.)

So in Tiger and DP 4.52, M5 1.2.2 works for me.

Mach 5 is UNUSABLE in my setup, so I will try some of the suggestions you guys are tossing around (downgrade, etc.)

I'm also getting the same problem. Extremely slow, unusable performance with Mach Five 1.2 and with the 1.22 beta - even with the tutorial sounds. I've gone back to version 1.07 which works great. It seems like ever since MOTU added streaming, I can't use Mach Five on my home computer. If anyone knows where to download 1.08, please let me know.

The mention of the Sonnet card a couple of posts back got me interested since I have one installed on both my home and office computers. The office computer works fine with the newer Mach Five though. It is only the home computer that doesn't. Maybe it has to do with the version of the Sonnet card. The one at the office is newer.

Both my systems are about 1.2 GHz and 1 GB RAM.
