Re: Time for a name change?...Digital Performer to...
Funniest thread ever.
Seriously, Digital Performer is a wonderful name. A relic of 80s american software technology at it's best. Something so naive about it, no loud X's or K's instead of C's etc. This is something I would preserve at all cost. Isn't DP enough as a nickname? Oh well, I'm sure MOTU executives aren't stupid enough to name it Ultramix3000 anyway.

Re: Time for a name change?...Digital Performer to...
Name change = corporate takeover (most often).
Digital Performer has an identity. Why change the name of your kid in her/his teens? It would only confuse the kid and her/his friends!
Granted, in the 80s the term "digital" was the buzz word of the future. It's okay that the future is here in some ways.
Maybe when all things digital become antiquated...?
I certainly hope that we don't lose site of the necessity and importance of being "performers".
If names are really the issue, I just don't feel motivated by the names of other DAWs. Music tends to be more visceral than "logical" for me. A DAW is more than a "tool" or a "basis" for musical "cues", or for that matter any kind of inNuendo. Other than the car, I only put things I don't use in my "garage"-- and that includes bands.
I am a performer. The results I get from my preferred DAW are digital. Maybe I've just grown older, but I'm okay with it as it is.

With all my respect, an devotion, to your experience and skills, Frodo, excuse me to be a little *epidermic*.Frodo wrote:[...]Other than the car, I only put things I don't use in my "garage"-- and that includes bands.

Even though I still play few gigs, nowadays I spend much of my time as a lonely performer. I don't think I ever *used* bands. Playing with musicians has been the most intense, human and profitable experiences in my life.
But yes, every day, I'm also getting somewhat older, but trying to walk a good path, without regret.
Most of all, dear, have the best times you may take!

NOW it's digital, and it sounds a bit dated. But even if they renamed it to Quantum Performer, it will eventually sound dated as well... maybe in a century, but still

Hi Daniel: I hope I didn't offend. Perhaps I was being too subtle by suggesting names of other DAWs in my previous post. More specifically in this case, the name Garage Band does little to inspire me-- not nearly as much as the name Digital Performer. As I thought about a name change I realized that I honestly still like the name of Digital Performer. If the name would change I'd get used to it, but I would certainly miss it.daniel.sneed wrote:With all my respect, an devotion, to your experience and skills, Frodo, excuse me to be a little *epidermic*.Frodo wrote:[...]Other than the car, I only put things I don't use in my "garage"-- and that includes bands.

Because you named your kid Ignatius Beelzebub many years ago when you thought it was cool, but now that you’re older and your kid is entering High School it doesn’t seem like a good idea.Frodo wrote: Digital Performer has an identity. Re: Time for a name change?...Digital Performer to...
You can't really take out "Performer," can you? That's its heritage as a sequencer.
But IF they did decide to change the name, "Composer" would probably be a more accurate description of what people use it for. And that name has place in MOTU's roots as well.

I'd go with Performer in a flash, should they choose to drop the Digital. I am a performer from the very beginning to the very end. That will always be a huge part of my identity. It's why I started with this stuff to begin with -- to add something unique to my performance. (this was 1984, mind you) My problem with DP isn't that I think it needs a new skin. We've got Themes for that (yay). It's that I physically have trouble saying the name. If I say it very often, as one has to do when talking about it, I get a feeling that others are impatiently waiting for me while I gargle with marbles in my mouth. That's just me; maybe there are deep psychological implications there, but I think it's sheerly a physical thing.
Well, there is also the thing about watching others wince when I say the word. I assume, again, it's my gargling with marbles. Or maybe they wince because they have heard that Live, Logic, Record, yadda yadda beats DP this week, from studio rats who hang out and chew on this stuff all the time. Really, 95% of my reason for going along with this idea, even if it's just to vent here about it and it never comes to fruition, is that the name is just too hard to say. Performer would be a nice step backward, namingwise. I always found that easy to say and was happy to say it. It's about attracting new users from a marketing standpoint. Names matter. Performer is a good name. (And there may be better ones. Might as well consider them all.)
A side of me that doesn't come out often in these pages is poetry. I'm a word lover. I collect poetry, write it, and am even a little bit of a poetry scholar. I do understand how to use the words I write (whether or not I always do it). From any standpoint, Digital Performer is not a good usage of words. But we've already hit on all the reasons for that, so I won't go over it again. It's not my desire to instill bad feelings about the name. I mean, most likely I'll go to the grave using Digital Performer; that is, if MOTU at least outlives me, and I'll be happy to use it. Always. But I'll probably rely more and more on just saying DP, as MOTU themselves do on their manuals. The words "Digital Performer" have not appeared on MOTU's manuals in years! That should say something, right there.

Perhaps there is something of hope with this thread. When the look and even the name of the app become topics of discussion, we're into pure cosmetics. There's nothing wrong with that, mind you. It is in many ways a happier chat than those dealing with functionality, compatibility, and stability.
Someone said it earlier-- ".. a rose by any other name..." as long as it works.

I can feel your doubt about losing the actual name too. Even if, someday, my thong hurts after too many times saying the two *DP words*!
