Mac randomly pauses and then begins acting strangely, he

Greetings,

I have a Mac G3 B&W OS9.2.2, it seems that after an hour or two of operation my Mac appears to access the harddrive or CD drive (I haven't figured out which one yet). During this process the computer will lock up for 5 to 10 secs. Once this is over the computer begins responding very sluggishly. The Audio in DP places back distorted or if I am playing a game the graphic updates and movement is much slower.

Please Help Getting ready to do some serious recording and I need to figure this out.
