Redirecting Quicktime MIDI out

Redirecting Quicktime MIDI out
I'm trying ro redirect QT MIDI out to an external synth. I can do it through other programs but I'm only offered the internal QT synth. in the QT sys. pref. panel. Idealy I'd like to redirect to Apples IAC driver which is installed and activated. However it dosen't show up on the synth. list. Anyone know if I need additional software or something?

Re: Redirecting Quicktime MIDI out
Let me guess, you're trying to play your QRS with MIDI files from iTunes right? Same here (except I have a Yamaha). I haven't been able to get this to work in OS X. The help file says it should work. It works fine in OS 9. I've reported this as an OS X Quicktime bug since version 10.1 to Apple and they acknowledge that it's a problem but have not ever fixed it.
Go report this. The more that do, the better chance it will work someday.

"Ding" - Doesn't just make sense to use such a great jukebox program to control the piano?
Where do I go to send this bug report to Apple's Quicktime team?
I've posted on Apple's iTunes Discussion forum but that's not really the same thing.

Re: Redirecting Quicktime MIDI out
By the way, midipipe allows you to build a 128 song playlist and redirect these to any MIDI device. It's not as nice as iTunes would be, but it works.
The other thing I've been looking at but haven't done anything about yet, is to create Spotlight comments for MIDI files and use spotlight as a playlist manager and then use something like mighty MIDI to play the file. Again, not as nice as iTunes. Apple just needs to fix Quicktime preferences.

Re: Redirecting Quicktime MIDI out
Here's the text of my bug report number 4110763. It has a status of "closed." I submitted this most recent bug report on 6-may 2005. Closed in this case means they've evaluated it and verified its a bug and have sent it off to engineering (a black hole as far as I can tell).
"Quicktime help file states the following:
"Playing MIDI Files
QuickTime Player can import MIDI (Karaoke MIDI, Standard MIDI, and General MIDI) formats. To open a MIDI file, choose File > Open File and select the file, or drag the file to the QuickTime Player icon in the Dock.
QuickTime uses its built-in synthesizer to play MIDI files. You can also have QuickTime use an external synthesizer instead of the built-in one.
To specify a different synthesizer:
Open System Preferences, click QuickTime, and then click Advanced.
Choose the synthesizer you want from the Default Synthesizer pop-up menu."
The External MIDI Playback does not work. There are no external MIDI devices visible in the preference list even though these devices exist in my system and they work with all other MIDI programs including Logic Pro and Garage Band. So it is not some MIDI driver issue. This is a Quicktime bug.
This feature has not worked since Quicktime was ported to OS X. The manual says it should work. It always worked under OS 9 version of Quicktime. This is a very important feature. Please fix it."
