Looking to replace my almost dead Powerbook G4. Use it mainly as my office/internet computer, but I do routinely use it for mobile recording with either a Motu Traveler or Focusrite Saphire.
My question is:
Is anyone using a Mac Mini as a computer for mobile recording? They seem pretty powerful now, and I know I would need to lug around a display for it, but the price of a 17-inch MacBook Pro versus and Mac Mini with a 17-inch LCD display is quite enticing.
Any thoughts?
Mac Mini for portable recording?

The HDMI out is cool... There's flat panel TV's everywhere.

Re: Mac Mini for portable recording?
I have stuffed my Mac Mini, Traveler, and FireWire hard drives in a gig bag to take them to the studio for a few jobs. I wanted to do mixes and masters on a more familiar system with all the plug-ins I like in DP, but I also wanted to use the better monitoring system and outboard gear at the studio. I just plugged in my computer in place of the studio's PowerMac G5. It worked out great. Possibly the only gripe I have is the bulky DC adapter that I had to carry with the computer, but the new Mac Mini model doesn't need an adapter.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.

I use a Mac Mini and Logic 8 with my Motu 828MKII. Its an older mini with the ddr2 667 ram. Running a C2D 1.6 ghz? IIRC. It works just fine as long as you record to an external drive. The internal 5400 rpm drive will have problems with multiple sources.
My last remix project was 34 channels, so its possible!

The 2010 Mac Mini has a built in power supply, so it's not necessary to carry around that power brick. Makes it much easier.
Mac Pro 1.1, SL 10.6.8, 13 gigs ram, DP7, 2 MTP-AV-USB, MTP-AV serial, Microlite, 828mk2, 828mk3, HDX-SDI, 7 other Macs

Re: Mac Mini for portable recording?
Has anyone tried the new Mac Mini HDMI output for full screen HD Quicktime output? I am wondering whether the Mini might be good enough to feed the projections/video wall for a concert.......... (my movies are all at Apple ProRes 1280 x 720)
any thoughts would be much appreciated..
Cheers
