SOLVED: UltraLite (original) and MicroBook on same machine?

Post by dburns01854 »

I've had the UltraLite since if first came out. I just got a MicroBook, and want to be able to switch from one to the other, depending on the gig.

I installed the new drivers and the MicroBook software, and the MB seems to work, but my software can't use the UL now.

I'm on a WinXP SP3 Pentium M (single core) laptop.

I've got to spend some time analyzing it this weekend, but I'm wondering if there is some known incompatability?

Thanks!

Is anybody successfully running an Ultralite and a MicroBook on the same machine?

Thanks.

Hi Dave.

I think yours is the first post from a windows Microbook user in this forum. So it might well be that there aren't many people around who can help you with your query.

I would have expected that you could swap between devices the same way I can swap connection methods between firefire and USB on my Ultralite Hybrid. Power the device down, change the connecting plugs, power on again.

Like you I look forward to hearing from other microbook users.

I have and UltraLite and a MicroBook also, and they're both working fine for me. I did notice that the installer is a little different than older versions, and you have to choose to install by the FireWire/USB audio driver package and the MicroBook driver package. If you only choose to install one of them at a time, the other one will be uninstalled.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.

I'm not sure what you mean here.

If I recall, the MB installed it's own drivers and CueMix FX (it said it was "updating" CueMix the first time I ran it). When it was done, I had a single updated CueMix icon, and two icons originally installed by the UL, which control Sample Rate and something else (will have to look). When I plugged in the MB, it worked alright. When I reboot and plug in the UL, all three icons tell me there is no MOTU hardware connected.

It is heartening to know that someone has both units working on the same computer. I will continue to mess with it, and pay more attention to what is happening step by step.

At any rate, the updated CueMix worked fine with the MB, but not the UL.
I have a ticket in, but it's been a week since their initial response.

Thanks.

I've got this working now, and it seems the problem was that I didn't update the UL prior to installing the MB software. I thought I could just run the installer and take care of both units at the same time, but that didn't work out too well.

Here's what I did to get everything working:

1) Restored a backup C: to a state before I tried installing the new MB.
2) Downloaded (again) the latest USB/FW WinXP software from MOTU (MOTU_Audio_Installer-Win-100802).
3) Ran the installer, but left the "Install MicroBook" checkbox BLANK.
4) Tested the UL with my software. It worked fine, though I had to reassign all my audio routing in Forte (not surprising, it saw the updated driver as new hardware).
5) Ran the installer again, this time checking the MicroBook box.
6) Tested the MB and it worked fine.
7) Rebooted with the UL and all is well.

So, now I'm very happy to have two great audio interfaces available to use on gigs, depending on how much gear I need for the job. I still have to work on the MB settings and routings, but at least it is getting along with the UL.

Should I send a note to MOTU, or wait and see how long it takes them to update my ticket (from last week)?
