Creating a Transpose button in the CONSOLE...

Post by drumoverload »

Hello,
I've been trying to create a global (or even just per instrument) transpose slider or - + button
in the Console. The manual has allowed me to get the basics of the console window and control certain plug-in automations in real-time but i really want to create some sort of controller via either a MIDI fader or -+ buttons that will change the instruments by semi-tones. Any Ideas? This seems to be something that doesn't get covered in the HOW TO videos either. Humph.
I'm more than willing to spend the hours fiddling with this but just can't seem to get a foothold on it. Please note this has to be for real-time live performance not for recording/playback.

Hope someone can help!!!!

That may be doable in the Custom Consoles, but there's no need. There exists a Transpose MIDI Plugin, available at REGION/MIDI EFFECTS PLUGINS/TRANSPOSE. It will do what you want in real time. If you choose, you can later commit the transposition to the track itself.

Hey Shooshie,
I have been trying that but can't see how I would assign it to a MIDI CC#, let alone be able
to flick through various transpositions (ie fader or -+ buttons)
I'm not the most savvy of MIDI guys so perhaps I'm missing something?
thanks, M

My apologies. I thought you were just looking to be able to transpose the notes by any given amount, on the fly. I didn't realize you wanted to be able to CHANGE the transposition at will using a controller. Consoles will not do that AFAIK, nor will the MIDI Transpose.

The only thing I can think of for you would be to load your samples or create your synths in something like MOTU's Mach5, where anything is automatable by Control-Clicking it. Perhaps pitch would be, too. Kontakt may also offer this; I don't know.

In the meantime, I think you're going to be stuck transposing by amounts you set with the mouse or scroll wheel, unless you can get a Control Surface Interface which offers that ability. There may be ways to access DP's controls via those same controller numbers used by such a control surface interface. Perhaps someone will chime in and tell us if they know how to do that.

Hi Shooshie,
Thanks for the detailed response. I suspected that this was the case. I actually have an environment in Logic that will do this, but I always have (and I suspect) always will prefer the make sense set up of DP over Logic. just a personal thing, but I always come back to DP to see if i can re-create the same project. Old habits die hard I guess :)
I work with Kontakt 4, PLAY and ETHNO and none of them will allow a 'global' transpose to be automated from their interfaces, at least not that I am aware.
Thanks again!

Hi,
I am not quite sure if this would work. But maybe you should take a look at a program called midipipe. As far as I can recall you can creat all kinds of MIDI transformation and or automation. But then again, as I've already said, I don't know for sure because it's been a while since I last worked with that app.
Anyway, good luck.

Awesome jkramlofsky!
It looks on the surface that this may work. I'll check it out and report my findings!

Seems to be doing the trick, lots of flexibility too. Could be spending some hours with this one :)
