where can I buy OSX 10.5 upgrade?

Post by cartwheelpro »

Anyone know where to just purchase Leopard OSX 10.5?
I don't need the box set with ilife etc and I can't go to SL yet
Because I'll lose my Ethno 1 instrument. I'm not ready to shell out $200
to upgrade to Ethno 2.

Thanks

If anyone has it, they should.

I just went through this a couple months ago. I can’t believe how hard it is to find 10.5 disks of any kind, and especially for less than $200, since 10.6 has been out for 2 years.

Considering all the machines out there that are 10.5 compatible (at the best) it does seem odd that Apple doesn't keep it in stock. Also, a very large segment of applications have as requirements 10.5.8 or above.

I went through this recently, also. OWC hasn't had 10.5 on its website for a while. I didn't call them to ask, though.

What Mac do you have? The signature says G5 Mac Pro. Can't be both. If its a Pro, didn't it come with 10.5?

Normally you could buy a used OS X box from someone who had moved on to the next version, but 10.6 was sold as an update, so someone with 10.5 and 10.6 may need to keep the 10.5 licence to run 10.6. Otherwise you could buy 10.5 from anyone who has moved on to 10.6.

Very unlikely it will work, and dodgy licensing if it does. The install disks are tailored to the specific Mac they come with.

Here's something that claims to be an upgrade from 10.4 to 10.5.1 for $149. Price is nuts, I suppose it really is a seller's market.

Bayswater, thanks for the link. I'll check it out. Its crazy that one can't find a reasonably priced upgrade for a system that has been out for a while now. Everytime I do this I feel like I'm getting pushed right to the edge of my budget. The marketing folks must know that we will eventually pay the $200 Because all the pricing on my upgrades are just that, Ethno, Waves, DP, Mac.....etc. :banghead:

I don't know why the individual license isn't readily available for its $129 list price. One could still buy OS 7.6 even after X was released.

One wants to be kosher with licensing but, when Apple no longer makes it available, I would be looking at Craigs List. In the San Francisco area, used retail boxes go for around $50.

BTW, 10.5 requires a DVD player able to read Dual Layer disks. All G5s came with one but not all G4s capable of running 10.5. If your internal DVD won't let you install, you need a Firewire external - a USB external won't boot a PPC (only an Intel). You can also install in Target Disk mode from another computer.

10.6 does not need 10.5 to install - only an Intel chip set. 10.5 is the last OS that works on the PPC. Just like 10.4 is needed for slow G4s and G3s, 10.3 on first gen iMacs and 10.2 for the Beige G3s... all machines that are still in use (I know, I take care of them for schools around here).

Man, I keep everything. I think I still have the OS 7.5 install disks and certainly from OS 8 onwards. You just never know when a legacy machine falls into your lap and you want to use it for something else. I like sending older machines to my nieces every so often and installing a clean OS and programs (yeah, I keep those too!) is very welcome for an elementary school kid. Heck, I bought a "snow" iMac (last bulky all in one model) for $4.99 and was able to install OS 10.3 on it. It's in my wife's 4th grade classroom getting a workout by 50 kids a day. :)

I have 10.4.11 working like a champ on two Snow iMacs with 128mB RAM. I forget where the cutoff is - possibly the ones with a single USB (I forget)? I do know that, if it has FW, 10.4.11 works.

I am the same way, I still have system disks going back to 5.something for my Mac+. Ya never know...

Now that you mention it, I think it was 10.4.

Hi,
I just bought 10.5 from an applestore rep 2 days ago for $129 plus a few bucks tax. They don't list it on their website anymore, but if you call and ask for a product specialist you should be able to still get it. Then you can update it to 10.5.8 on the website. I believe that is the highest OS version you can use on an non-intel machine.

Cheers, Greg
