Mult'ing Tracks in DP (i.e. Drums)

Post by Keith Henry »

Greetings all,

I am using DP 6.03/Dual 2.0 G5 PPC 6GB RAM/PCI-424/1224&2408 MKI.

How can I mult (drum) tracks in DP 6? I have searched this site over and the DP manual and find nothing. I know most of you know what I'm referring to. It is is somewhat similar to busing but, it's additive outputting the tracks instead of busing tracks to an aux. You have a duplicate output of the chosen tracks. If any of you use PT, in PT while selecting your track(s) ouputs, you can hold down (I think, can't remember) shift/option (?) and can now multiply your outputs.

Ex. Drum tracks>shift/option pull down output assignments>you can add say bus 1&2 along with Analog out 1&2. I now would have duplicates outputting of my drum tracks-#1 all drums are outputting to Aanal of 1&2, #2 in addition to outputting to bus 1&2. This way, on the mult'ed aux bus I can (heavy) compress the entire drum tracks as a stereo bus. This is in addition to the individual track plugins (EQ's, Compression) that are outputted to Analog 1&2.

Do I have to set this up in the Bundles section? So far the work around I've used is assigning bus sends on each track, setting the send amount the same as my track fader level, and setting the send pan the same as my track pan. This is obviously not the way to mult tracks.

Hope all this made since and I'm sure most of you know what I'm saying, especially if you're familiar w/ doing this in PT.

Regards
Keith

Output the drum tracks to a stereo bus. Create two Aux tracks and set both of their inputs to that bus. Output both to your mains. Process the individual tracks and the Aux tracks as you like.

Another way: For more control over individual levels (let's say you want less kick in the parallel Aux), sometimes it's better to use Sends (post fader) to an Aux track. Set the Send levels to unity and then tweak from there for the parallel mix.

Thanks Dan!

Ah Yes.... Now I should've known this. Even the busing post fader makes sense too-duh.

Boy I feel you there Dan. Good thing I've found about unsold CD's; they make great coasters, stocking stuffers, rear view mirror hangers (you can even attach an air freshener to the back side), frizbees, SOS reflectors, etc. : )

I checked out your link though. Very good sounding production. Peter Wilson - Electric guitar, nice wah work on Chance Of Two On Love. Where did you record this? At home in the box or at a studio? Sounds like you had some good technique, mics, and pres.

Here's my link (a bit heavier but, you'll like "I Sleep Alone")

Thanks again

Hi, Keith,

Glad that made sense to you.

Hey, thanks for visiting our website and for havin' a listen. Appreciate it.

Mixed in the box with DP at our modest studio here. Mastered at Gateway. Nothing fancy for mic pres -- an Octopre and an Onyx 800-R. Did the best we could do at the time.

We have a new bass player and drummer now -- killer players. Very exciting for us. Next week we're going to another studio to record a six-song EP for our upcoming shows. I just need a change of venue. Now that my album is out of the way, we've added songs by Peter Wilson, the lead guitarist. Great songwriter.

I listened to some of your stuff. A Must, Dedicated Phonkbutt, and Body and Soul -- I really liked the feel and mood and attitude of those tracks.

Take care and hang in there.
