DP 7.2 goes live

Oh man, I'm salivating for this upgrade now. Still on 5.1.3 and the list of improvements that matter to me just got really really long.

WAV recording, contextual menus, themes, Novation Remote SL control surface support, pre-rendering, consolidated V-Racks, Pro Verb, AU side chain support, better sample rate conversion, Plug-in Manager, better comping, I'm sure I'll find all kinds of uses for the cabinet emulations and on and on!

Just gots to see what piggy bank I can rob for the $$$!

I didn't see the Novation SL Remote support... Where was that? I know there's built in OSC support however.

I'm on v6 and decided to do the upgrade also with this update. Unfortunately, I couldn't get my order through on the on-line store - the page keeps having some kind of error, so you'll probably have to call. I wish they had an instant download option for those of us who need instant gratification now.

I heard back from a source at MOTU that Digital Performer 7.2 will probably work normally on 10.4.11, but it is "officially unsupported." I guess it's one of those use at your own risk deals.

Ah, so that would make it like Logic 9, which isn't "supposed" to run on a
G5 but does.

I'll give installation another try tomorrow morning. This is indeed intriguing.

Based on this thread I decide to install. So far, so good. Opened up a few old, big-ish files, no problems.
Early days yet but I'm reasonably confident!

Yes, CONTROL-CLICK is a very important feature in DP. For all the graphic editing windows, CONTROL-DRAG is the proportional drag. You can do amazing things with that! Not a feature you want to give up once you use it.

Yes, for Throwing Soundbites in the S.E. Believe me, I use it so frequently that at this point that I don't even think about the keys I'm actually pressing.

Wait, what does the control key do now? I just tried it, and i see the hand change, but it looks like the same function. I think what you were saying is a command I've been looking for for a little while, the throw thing.

At the moment, I'm diggin' Alloy with custom gradient meters and custom selection color. Things just feel a bit smoother in general. I think MOTU may have fixed/optimized a few things that they haven't mentioned. In any case, it's a welcome update.

Okay, installed it on my PPC G5, OSX10.4.11 - opened my most
demanding current project, with 60 tracks and oodles of plugs -
running fine. I then created a new project, "test-launched"
every potentially problematic VI and plug I could, including
the very latest version of Amplitube 3, Orange Vocoder
10AE, and Melodyne Editor - if any plug-ins would cause DP to
stumble, those would be the ones. No problems. Interestingly,
my most CPU-intensive plug-ins actually load a bit faster in
7.2.

Next I tried merging soundbites on a recently recorded bass
track - worked fine,and the slow waveform redraw problem is
gone. Yay!

I believe it's safe to proceed with DP 7.2 on a PPC running 10.4.11.

just want to chime in that i'm ecstatic about the THEMES. wow.... i never did fully get used to the bright white, as a long time DP user, i always liked the grey... now i'm loving the theme called PRODUCER. i think it's my favorite.

Yay, indeed! I hope you find no problems whatsoever. I kind of have an intuitive urge which says things will be great overall. My only worry is whether there might be some glaring omission that comes out in a bounce or something to that effect. All doubts are easily put to rest by simply doing it. It's like "old files." As long as you haven't had those files on a drive that messes them up, DP will read back to 1986 or so. Is there any other Mac software around that will still read its own files from 1986, then write changes as if nothing ever happened? That's got to be a record. Being so retro-compatible, I'd expect little trouble. Where I would expect to find trouble would be in areas that involve 3rd party drivers that are not up to date.

WOW! I missed a day on the Nation and didn't even know this was out.

Now the download is taking forever!!! Will DP 7.12 get jelous if 7.2 is downloading in the background? And what's to become of my AmpGuiGold? LOL

I'm guessing that most elements of any of Amplidood's Mods will work the same if you simply create a theme and copy all of the files's that Amplidood modified for a particular theme into it. It may be a problem for details which were altered in the XML files. But a lot of the colours and the look should still work and will be easy to check out with a couple of button clicks.

There will obviously be some things that won't look quite right, and Amplidood has pointed out that updating the mods is not going to be as easy as it might seem.
