Dan Dean bass library for Kontakt
Hopefully this isn't a dumb question, but I'm havin' a hard time figuring this out.
I just bought the Audiomidi Dan Dean GigaBass library NO Brainer, I have Kontakt 3 and 4 and I havin' a tough time figuring out where to install the library. The instructions say to drop the DD folder in my Kontakt directory...Where will I find the Kontakt directory?
Sorry if this is Computers 101, but I just wanna get this right.
Thanx in advance

Re: Dan Dean bass library for Kontakt
Technically, it shouldn't matter where you put it, and newer versions of Kontakt do a better job of scanning your hard drives for Kontakt libraries.
I think the suggestion was probably misworded, as it leads one to think the libraries should be copied to the application directory for Kontakt.
Probably what they are suggesting is to copy the library folders to the directory that contains the main Kontakt library that comes with Kontakt.
I recommend AGAINST doing this, in case a re-install or upgrade of Kontakt accidentally wipes out your Dan Dean content and you don't have backups.
On the other hand, it is possible, but unlikely, that the Instruments and Multis in the library use relative paths that assume a directory offset from the main default Kontakt library installation area. If so, you can resave the Instruments and Multis (.nku and .nkm files) after loading them and "finding their sample files" automatically.

Let us know how it sounds! $20 is a pretty cool deal if you get some usable basses out of it!

Re: Dan Dean bass library for Kontakt
I haven't used Kontakt for a while, and I'm not in the studio right now, but as I recall you can put the library more or less anywhere (like on Macintosh HD). Then you just navigate to the corresponding place from within Kontakt's internal browser - and launch your bass instruments from there. Hope that does it for you, or I may give myself 30 lashes

Geoff

Re: Dan Dean bass library for Kontakt
Thanx everyone. It turns out you can put it anywhere, although I was assuming the library would show up as a Library within Kontakt like my Slate Drums and my World instruments. It does, not however, and I just have to use the navigation pane to get to where I want.
So far the Dean basses sound pretty and definately worth $20.00 to me......

Re: Dan Dean bass library for Kontakt
My CPU can't handle having Kontakt and the browser open at the same time, so I'm going to have to do this from memory.
My recollection is that Kontakt 3 or 3.5 (and of course 4 as well) can be asked to scan your drives to create a database of recognized libraries, but I haven't tried this yet as I plan to upgrade computers in a couple of weeks anyway.
I simply go to the left-most tab, which gives you a view of your drive system. As I organize my Kontakt libraries on two external drives with a similar directory structure, by vendor, it doesn't take very long to find them this way.
I believe the ones that show up in the Libraries tab are strictly those that involve license keys, such as ones that used to be delivered strictly with Kontakt Player and/or Kompakt and/or Impakt (though the latter two went away, along with most of the libraries that supported them).
For example, on my computer, the Libraries tab shows me the main Kontakt library, all the Sample Modeling instruments, the Best Service Accordions, Chris Hein Guitars, and maybe a couple of others that I have forgotten are individually license-controlled.
It is unlikely the Dan Dean libraries were treated this way, as I think they were ported from Gig anyway weren't they? Probably they are delivered as vanilla Kontakt libraries vs. optioned with the self-contained Kontakt Player. I think that is the main distinction that leads to whether they show up in the Libraries tab or not.

Re: Dan Dean bass library for Kontakt
Whoa! This thing has rocked my sampled electric bass guitar world. Bought it for Reason and just finished going through the programs. Especially sweet is the thunderbird. I'm unable to spend much at this point so some of the obvious bass SW choices are out of the question, but this $20 investment should keep me happy for quite a while.

Thanx so much. That explains it all clearly to me now. Glad this library worked out for folks. If I weren't at the limit of disc space I might have grabbed it due to the low risk pricing.

Re: Dan Dean bass library for Kontakt
Yoiks! This has to be the best $20 I've ever spent. If I can't find the ideal bass for just about any kind of project among this lot, I'll give the game away. It's very, very good IMHO.
Cheers,
Geoff

Is it still on sale? The page says compatible with EX-24 and NN-XT but doesn't mention Kontakt.

It's available until 7/22, and you can get it for Kontakt. I've been testing it out in the Kontakt 4 player (the free one).
Dan Dean Bass no-brainer

Re: Dan Dean bass library for Kontakt
I'd like to pick up this library but don't have Kontakt.
I was looking at the free player and one of the limitations is.
"Universal Import of virtually any sample format -
(15 minutes in demo mode)"
What does this mean if I where to use it with the Dan Dean library?

Re: Dan Dean bass library for Kontakt
I noticed last night that The Dean library timed out in Kontakt 3(free) and 4(free)--meaning they were indeed running in Demo mode. I however still have a a full working version of Kontakt 2 that I had forgotten about and the library is workin' fine.
So to answer your question-it does appear that you need a full version of Kontakt to use the Dean library. I did not know this when I purchased, and I may have changed my mind had I known I would need a fully working version of Kontakt (even though I did have and totally forgot)

Re: Dan Dean bass library for Kontakt
I'm mostly curious about the upright bass, as there is such variety in uprights and it's nice to have more than one personality available when mocking up acoustic bass tracks.
I have a semi-acoustic upright bass (a full-size bass does not fit in my tiny car, which is the only reason I don't have one). I haven't tried recording it other than as part of stereo grabs of the entire band at a gig (while I'm on stage playing the thing), but I suspect I'll still get better results with sample libraries of full-sized basses.
Dan Dean is single velocity layer and no round robin, which I think puts a lot of people off. Also, there's no Kontakt scripting. But I wonder if there will be later upgrades to this library that include KSP?
As an example, Precisionsound has been offering free updates to their libraries that include KSP, and in some cases even include an entirely new sample set with additional velocity layers! The smaller vendors often do really nice things like this.
