Audio MIDI Setup weirdness

Post by bkshepard »

I have an M-Audio ProFire 610 connected to my laptop running OS 10.5.8. In Audio MIDI Setup, and all audio programs, the ProFire 610 shows up as "ProFire 610 (2)" as if there are two of them. In the MIDI Devices tab, it only shows as "ProFire 610", but I get the "(2)" indication in the Audio Devices tab and in any audio applications and in the Sound system preferences. Everything seems to be working correctly, it's just an odd designation. I can't find any place to delete this one and create a new entry. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Two versions of the drivers for the 610 installed?

Thanks for the suggestion, but if there are two drivers, I sure can't find them. I even ran the uninstall app, and then reinstalled and I still get the same problem. Where does M-Audio put the drivers? I found the MIDI ones, but no audio ones.

I don't have time for a detailed response right now, but you might try and go inside the System folder and extensions or do a Search on anything with maudio or 610 and enable system folders. Used to be you had to use the terminal, but you might be able to find a driver file somewhere. They usually end with ".kext" for Kernel Extension.

For example... I checked just now. If I go to:

./System/Library/Extensions

In that folder I find a bunch of things including:

Motu MIDI Driver.kext
MOTUPCIAudio.kext

Look through that folder and see if there's anything in there whose file name gives you the idea that it's related to the M-Audio 610. If so... deleted it, reboot your Mac, and then run M-Audio's installer again.

Don't know if that will work, but it's worth a shot I guess. :)

That's odd, Brian. You might try a couple of things.

1- Delete the Audio MIDI plist.

2- Delete the Audio MIDI configurations as well and start a new one.

I'm guessing it may be an A/M error.

Hey Gang,

Thanks for all the suggestions. Unfortunately, none of them worked. I guess I should leave well enough alone. Everything is actually working, it's just the odd indication in the menus of the various audio apps. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Of course, my usual philosophy is, if it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is!

That's right !! And if you break it when you fix it, it probably needed replacing anyway.
