DP7 and Korg Nano control?

Post by greatlovesongs »

Hi all,

Anyone having luck getting a Nano Control to operate as a Control surface in DP7/Snow Leopard (latest versions)?
Any details would be great on whether this is a lost cause or not.......
I've hit a wall on this one.

Thank you,
James

I don't have the Nano control, but I believe that it's buttons and transport are mappable to MIDI notes and cc's. If this is the case then James' excellent M-Audio tutorial would mostly apply in getting it going:

Personally, I would recommend getting Bome's MIDI Translator and assigning the MIDI notes/CCs from the Nano control to actual keyboard shortcuts with MIDI Translator.

Thank you for the great suggestions. I'll try these and see if they'll get the unit functioning.

I'm still putting off getting my Keystation Pro 88's controller functions to work inside DP, though I'll be poring over James's tutorial when I do. I really wish DP would start supporting MIDI control surfaces (they're pretty much standard now!) without jumping through hoops. In fact, how hard would it be for them to include templates for at least the top brands (M-Audio, CME, Novation, Akai, Yamaha, Korg, Roland, etc.)? I'd hate to resort having to buy a HUI when my Keystation has a full set of transport controls and complete control surface I don't currently use.

check out MIDI Translator. Assigning the MIDI to keyboard shortcuts can be better than a control surface in some cases.

Anyone else got this to go yet? I tried following James's instructions for the maudio stuff, still no luck. I can't get anything to trigger the transport though. I even tried setting notes on my keyboard. Nano works for other controls. It comes up when I set the command.

What about sending MMC commands. I see the nano can, but still no luck in DP.

Its a bit laborious and doesn't always seem to work - its to do with the Editor that comes with it and saving stuff which then has to be loaded back into the Nano - took me quite a while to suss out. James' tutorial works pretty well for the NanoKontrol. In the end I went back to using the factory settings while making sure in the Commands window I did what James instructed and some others :
Once you've done that scoll down (or search on "transport") until you find the "Transport Commands" category. Find the row for "Play" and click in the MIDI Event Column.

NOW PAY ATTENTION - This next little detail is CRITICAL!!

While the box is highlighted... press and HOLD DOWN the Play button on your Axiom/Oxygen transport. You should see the controller #24 and Value 127 as shown. DO NOT RELEASE THE BUTTON YET.

WHILE HOLDING DOWN THE BUTTON, use your computer mouse to click outside of this square... the title bar of the Commands window works for this. It should now accept Controller 24, Value 127. (If you had released the button before clicking outside the value box, the value would have changed to 0, which would not work correctly.)

Repeat this for the rest of the applicable transport controls working your way down through Record, Stop, Rewind, and Fast Foward. Just click the appropriate box, hold down the correct transport button on your Axiom/Oxygen, then WHILE HOLDING THE BUTTON DOWN, click on the title bar of the Commands window.

When you get to the Loop button, I assign that to the "Memory On/Off" button which is further down the list than the others which is the same as turning your loop points on and off by using the "7" key on the numeric keypad.

Now if all has gone right, you should have full transport control of DP from your M-Audio Axiom/Oxygen keyboard. I'm using an Oxygen 49 and it's working great!! Cheers!

This is a pretty old thread, but I thought I'd add some details how I got this to work. The one step that might not be clear in the tutorial discussed here is this:

In DP's commands window, you must go to the top and enable "Transport Master" under "MIDI Masters". Otherwise none of the MIDI controls will work in the "Transport" section.

Then with NanoControl factory settings, if you press the play button under "MIDI Event" for "Play/Stop Toggle", you'll get #45 | 127. Remember to click away while holding the button down.

Good luck.

Thanks John. I gave up and made an ipad control surface using touch osc, works great. But when I have a few minutes I will try again, just so I am not defeated!

I have the nanokontrol2 and I set it up following the included guide. No problems and everything works great out of the box.

In the iPad front, Motu's DP control app works pretty well too.

Yeh I have a NanoKontrol 2 as well and it's great! For the price it's amazing :D
Works like a charm, seems well built and the faders & knobs have a good feel to them.

... got one a couple months ago and its cool. Works like it says on the tin. I have an MCU at home but the Nano is nice when on the go. Well made. Why didn't they come out with this 10 years ago.
