Do not use Tech Tool Pro Directory Maintenance
Hi everybody,
I have to WARN VERY SERIOUSLY against using TechTool Pro - feature Directory Maintenance in category Performance. Do not use it for volume, which is installed any audio software on. I had serious problems with Audiodesk 2 on my PowerBook a few months ago (see attached correspodence with micromat).
The only solution is new-formatting of HD in that case, not only re-install application as written by micromat!!!!

Subject: Problems after directory maintenance
Date Posted: 03/08/2005 09:25:46 AM
Operating System: Mac OS X (10.3) or above
Product: TechTool Pro 4
Problem: Dear friends,
I would ask you for help with malfunction of application Audiodesk/MOTU, that occurs immediately
after the directory maintenance and optimization of the sydney volume on my PowerBook (for
technical specification of computer see attachment, please) by TechTool Pro. Audiodesk is on startup
volume named athens, Audiodesk document is saving on sydney volume.
The launch of Audiodesk is extraordinarily slow, ca 3 minutes, it stops for ca 2 min at plug-in
ParaEQ.bundle. Then, the opening of Audiodesk document is much slower, too. Most serious problem
is, that a number fields in plug-ins are blind, without basic values of parameter, as usually.
And now, what I made before:
1. I have chosen Directory Maintenance for sydney volume, in Journaling window unchecked
journaling for sydney volume,
2. when appeared Technical comparison screen, I have chosen Replace favorable changes - it was in
Catalog B-Tree info, row Used nodes and row Free nodes,
3. then I attempted to Optimization of sydney volume.
When I found out above mentioned problem with Audiodesk, I proceeded with uninstal and re-instal
of this application, but without desirable result.
The directory maintenance and optimization of startup volume followed - no effect.
Both application Audiodesk and FW driver MOTU828 are up-to-date.
Many thanks for your assistance.
All the best,
Roman

This is an issue that we are aware of, how some ever, there isn't anything that we can do about it
unfortunately. It has to do with the keying scheme that the various audio application manufactures use
that require their key to be located in an exact point on the drive. In the optimization process we end
up moving and thus causing it to no longer authenticate. The only thing that you can do is uninstall the
various apps and then reinstall after the optimization has completed. We have talked with several of
the companies and they are unwilling to change this scheme. I wish I had a better sollution for you!
Please let us know if you have any further questions.
Thank You

Re: Do not use Tech Tool Pro Directory Maintenance
Thanks for the heads up WARNING WARNING WARNING.
Out of curiosity exactly which version of TTPro 4 were you using? TTPro 4.what?
Also exactly what build of OS X 10.3 were you using TTPro 4. on ?
I have been using TTPro in PANTHER with no grief.
I have also been using TTPro ( a special version issued for TIGER ) in TIGER with no grief.
However I don't have Audiodesk/MOTU yet.
What does MOTU say?
I gues that's why they call that type of problem as Software Wars, DarkSide.

Re: Do not use Tech Tool Pro Directory Maintenance
midw,
I am using TTPro 4.0.3, at that time I had OS 10.3.8.
I did not ask for MOTU to solve this problem, I convinced of Micromat responsibility.
Look at forum Digital Performer, the same headline, too.
Thanks for your interrest.

Re: Do not use Tech Tool Pro Directory Maintenance
That's not a Micromat issue, it's a protection scheme issue from MOTU, Bombfactory and the like. Any defrag will surely give you the same results. Anytime I defrag my main drive, I have to reinstall certain plugs because of the protection schemes. For me, it's not a big issue since it only take me a couple minutes to fix. I haven't tried this with OSX, but you may want to think about locking/anchoring certain files so that the defrag utility can't move them.

Norton is known to corrupt audio/video files.Originally posted by terra:

I've personally lost 6 gigs of audio due to Norton.
The best directory maintenance program is Disk Warrior.
Hands down. Norton is a nightmare waiting to happen.
Check Apples help forums and read the horror stories.
You've been warned.

Re: Do not use Tech Tool Pro Directory Maintenance
TTP is not defragging a volume containing DP, point. It may defrag something, but certainly not fully...
There is iDefrag that I use to do this, and more... and Coriolis are very responsive ...
If you do a serach here, you will find posts about TTP, I posted for instance that since TTP 2.5 the defrag routine would not work...
Take care

Re: Do not use Tech Tool Pro Directory Maintenance
No, not yet on Tiger, I have several partitions, and if I need to repartition the drive , *THEN* I use iDefrag before iPartition, was recommended by Coriolis, from within Panther.
To defrag audio data volumes, I wipe and restore audio data, 'Hucky' like...
Take care
