Post by kpg »

I'm new to this, so a couple of questions.I picked up a motu828 with the accompanied cd, I have a 1 yr old h.p. running vista 64 Will I have any problem installing this, I read somewhere you need a t.i. chip, which my computer dose not have.
i'm not so sure about going into the computer and clicking on this and that to get it to work. thanks

Start > control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device manager > IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers

That is actually the s/w not the h/w but the 'manufacturer' field in the General box will give you a clue as to the identity of your FW chip. You could also read your manual or check the mobo manufacturer's website.

It is not only T.I. chips that work. They just tend to be the ones recommended if you need to buy a aftermarket add on firewire controller card because your controller card on the mobo is incompatible.

I have a VIA VT6308P on my mobo and it has never given me any trouble.

So you might as well simply install the s/w and see what happens. Then take it from there.

If possible do not use the supplied driver install CD. Go to the MOTU website and download the appropriate installer from there. It will be the most up to date.

There is no random clicking on this and that involved. Double click on the SetUpAudio file and follow the instruction. The manual is your friend. Ask again if something goes wrong and you cannot work out what.

You should download the current driver installer from motu.com. If the CD you have is rather old, then the version on the disc might not be compatible with the version of Windows you're using.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.

Thanks guys, I checked and I have a agere compliant fw card. I'll try and hook it up this week end, after I download the drivers.

I have an 828 firewire that has been working great for years. While recording in Sonar, suddenly my automation went crazy. I rebooted the computer but the 828 was working only intermittently. Sonar and other programs that use the 828 suddenly wouldn't respond. When starting up and cycling sometimes all the lights stay on sometimes it will stop cycling on 48 and sometimes on 44.1. When it doesn't show up the error message is to make sure it's on with the drivers installed etc. I uninstalled the 828 and the drivers and checked all the connections. The computer sees the new hardware. I Reinstalled it...no good, I'm at a point where I need to install updated drivers for my windows xp which has been recently updated ( which I think could be one of the problems )but I can't find updated drivers I only have my original motu disc. Anywhere to get most recent drivers for the motu 828 firewire or any other suggestions?

It's "motu" not "moto". :) I fixed the first post just so search engines can find it better. You can download drivers from MOTU's web site. You may need to register your 828 with MOTU and/or create an account at motu.com to get to the download section.

Thanks for the quick reply. The only thing that they have is 32 bit driver that might support their legacy products. They don't mention 828, too bad it's a pretty good sounding unit and it's a little disconcerting that they don't support it. I'll give it a try.

If you're asking why they don't have 64 bit support (and of course, why it wasn't yesterday) I can't tell you. I'm the Site Admin here, but I'm pretty much a Mac guy, so unfortunately can't help you much. :(
