If you need a mac, buy a mac. G5 is a good value, it is going to last you a long time. All new software will be built for both for a while.Originally posted by mgmediaworks:

First apple/intel machines are likely going to be entry level and powerbooks. So you can wait a year if you want an intel mac mini.

Any computer you buy anywhere any time is 'soon to be outdated.' It doesn't matter what the new stuff coming through the pipe is. So, if you need/want a new G5 now, just get it. It will not magically stop working the minute the first iNtelMac runs off the production line.

Re: x86 -money in garbage with G5
I just upgraded to a G5 dual 2.3Ghz. My previous computer is a G4 AGP Graphics with a 1Ghz Sonnet processor card. I pourchased the G4 back in 2001, and it served me really well. It still works well except for some reason it can't see PCI audio cards anymore (this happened after I tried to upgrade from my PCI-324 card to a PCI-424 card).
At any rate I completely bypassed the Quicksilver Mac generation including the ones with the infamous "Shop-Vac" fan noise, as well as the first generation of G5's.
My plan is to keep my G5 past the first generation of MacTel Macs and go with the second generation when they arrive. Basically if you stick to a plan like this you end up getting a new computer every four to five years instead of every two years which is much easier financially.
I agree it's a waste of time trying to buy a computer that will last for at least ten years. That's completely unrealistic.
BTW, so far my G5 2.3, Tiger and DP 4.52 are all happily living together. No audio dropouts, clicks or pops, no spiking, no slow GUI's, everything seems solid and stable.

define "outdated". the g5 platform will be supported by apple and vendors for a long time to come. motu pci cards are supported on both the x86 and the apple platforms, already. buy the best g5 you can afford and stop worrying about what other people will use in 18 months.Originally posted by mgmediaworks:
