Got an iPhone, Quickeys, iPad? Need remote DP? :)

Post by MIDI Life Crisis »

FREE (did I mention FREE) Quickeys for the iPhone. Send any Quickey shortcut on your Mac from your iPhone. Forgot to shutdown after leaving for a trip? Setup a Shutdown QK and wham! You're off.

http://itunes.apple.com/kr/app/quickeys ... d337947888" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

(the above link will open iTunes app store - you can cancel and just go to the website.)

But you may NOT want to shut that Mac off (or at least schedule regular startups and NO auto shutdowns, because now there is THIS!!!

http://www.jaaduvnc.com/features" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Combine this with an iPad and you essentially have a full screen DP or Finale or any other app on your Mac WITHOUT a laptop. Then again, DP on your iPhone is pretty cool as well.

I don't know what the world is coming to, but I'm loving it!

ps- There is a video demo page. Client software on your Mac required.

Interesting stuff! I'm in communication with a programmer in the UK who's currently testing a Mackie Control emulation app for iPad on Digital Performer. He's sent me some screen shots of the app and it looks very promising. I'll post more about it when it happens.

Is that a Mac application? If so, wouldn't the emulation already be "available" via the jaaduvnc?

He's running a special iPad emulation app from what I understand on the mini and DP on the a MacBook. His app will be for iPad and also on iPhone. I already use VnC for doing vocal takes and use my iBook with an external numeric keypad for that. I'm thinking a well-implemented touch screen control surface for iPad might in some ways be easier... especially if there's two way communication with the DAW showing time code, track names, etc.

What I'm really interested in is editing in DP on my Mac while on location elsewhere. If a cue doesn't work, I can deal with it immediately. Not sure how audio will work and that's a bit of a concern, but I'll check out the app shortly. You can run the iPhone/iPod to a TV or other compatible monitor but the touch screen on the iPad would be much more useful. Basically touch screen for the Mac w/o having to touch your monitor. I really like that! But the deal breaker for me is certainly how audio performs on the remote device(s).

Hope your investment pans out. Or is that "pads" out? :)

Well, his device is merely a control surface app. It's not trying to be anything more. His app has agreat potential, and he assured me he is testing it on DP-- he's not just going to check it in Logic and consider it "finished" at that point. I really can't say much more, but I've seen what he's been doing so far and I think it has enormous potential and when it is released it should work just as well with DP as it does with other DAW-- and that's something we unfortunately can't take for granted any more. I'd go so far as to say that it seems DP support is more often than not inadequate of flawed. When a developer says "it works in Logic" that shouldn't be considered an end of an argument like some consider it. :evil:

Wow. That's freaking awesome. I just installed it on my iPod touch and controlled DP from it. Only problem is that Quickeys on my Mac keeps crashing while using this. It also disconnects if the iPod goes to sleep.

What would be great is if there was a landscape view option with buttons, or smaller macro labels. I guess it would be nice if I had this on an iPad instead also.

Check out Keymote:

http://icedcocoa.com/keymote" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I've found it to work pretty well. You can send any key command to DP and control transport. You can also setup and name your own buttons and create a particular layout. It's an excellent, customizable, quick and dirty DP control:

There's also NumberKey but that's sort of limited to whatever transport operations you can do on your Mac's numeric keypad.

Wholeycrap. Dammit James. It's your fault if i go buy an iPad today.

I've always wanted a touchscreen with macro buttons to control all of the different shortcuts and quickeys functions I have in DP. This looks like it will definitely fit the bill. I sure hope it works in landscape mode.

thanx!

Woah there! Hold on a minute! :) So far all you get on the iPad is the enlarged iPhone version. I've written to the developers (I'd suggest maybe you write them too) asking for an iPad version that would work in landscape mode and also use the increased resolution of the iPad to give us more buttons per screen. It could be like the software XKeys or whatever that box was that was just user assignable buttons.

I also suggested to him that we should be able to set the background color of the buttons so they could be color coded. That way we could arrange our buttons and use color to group them together based on function, etc.

You're one step ahead of me. I was just going to suggest the same thing. I love my Xkeys. I keep thinking about buying a really big one, but I would much rather have a big touch screen full of buttons that I can easily change things on.

Well one thing I would also suggest to the developer is to allow us to build a profile that would allow multiple "pages" of keys in the same profile. It could even be invoked by a button itself. Could you imagine how powerful an app like that could be where you could press a button and it would call up another screen with buttons optimized for that task, then you could exit back out to the main screen? Time for me to write another email to them!

Just to jump in here, I would lust after a program like keypad for illustrator http://appshopper.com/utilities/keypad- ... r-for-ipad" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. If one could be developed for DP it would be great! A friend of mine uses it and he loves it. Just a thought.

I'm not sure about your post here. Just joined, first post, and I'm concerned about the legitimacy of this app.
