my G5 is full of dust!
Shone a torch through the front grill of my 6 month old G5 -i was amazed how much dust was in there! I will definately be doing some hovering in it soon.
Do other people find this too?
(there are after all about 5/6 fans in it sucking air in all the time...)

Re: my G5 is full of dust!
Whenever I do any internal work on my G4 (PCI cards, HDs, etc.) I always blow it out with canned air. And I always get a lot of dust, especially near the fan.
Since placing it in a desk closet (made for a tower) the problem is far less extensive, but it is still there. If you have that much dust in your Mac, then you have that much dust in your room, your lungs and anything else nearby. You might want to look into an air cleaner as well. Sears makes a great little one for about $150 and a larger one for $250. Highly recommended!

I hope you're not using a normal "hoover" to "hoover" it. Either use high pressure air or an anti static vac when working inside and around your electronic components.

Re: my G5 is full of dust!
I have never opened up a computer (that wasn't brand new) that didn't have dust in it. Just one of those things that happens over time. Canned air is your friend.
Re: my G5 is full of dust!
Never tried this but sounds like an interesting idea.
From an apple disscussions user:
Really, a leaf blower does a better and faster job. A leaf blower will be sure to blow the dust and dirt totally out of the computer case. Canned air might just relocate it. Canned air also does not have the umph to really blast the dust out of power supplies.

Sounds a little like the "piano tuner" who suggested using WD-40 on tight tunign pegs. It was a joke! (But one tuner was going to try it!)Originally posted by terance:

NOT! Think about it. A leaf blower will also pick up surrounding dust and add it to your computer. And it is way too strong to use on delicate chips.
A can of air is designed for this purpose and does a fine job. You might see a luttle surface dust, but it that bothers you, don't open you Mac in the first place. While you're at it, you might want to go see a shrink for the disorder!
Seriously, using a leaf blower is either a joke or the suggestion of a compleete idiot.
Let me know how that turns out for you (if you can get online after that!)

Re: my G5 is full of dust!
Hang on there guys!
MIDI Life Crisis has it exactly right.
Before you know it some one will suggest taking the computer to a car wash.
Now I really don't know if "cleaning" the interior is so important unless Mother is coming over to do her "dust" inspection.
Talking to my mac tech guy about this very question not too long ago he sezs just leave it be it's not going to cause any harm and besides the cat loves the smell coming out of a dirty dusty MAC.
I sure enjoyed this topic in the midst of screaming at my lead guitar guy to try and play to the beat of DigitalPerformer and I hope Mr. Steele gives us some slack to have a good belly laugh this Friday.

Dust build up is like putting a blanket on the components. They will get much hotter depending on the amount of dust.
I helped a friend with his G5 when the SuperDrive stopped working. I got to his house and looked at the G5 and man, was it dirty. He lives in an old farmhouse next to a farm and the G5 was on the floor. Man. I removed the SuperDrive and opened it up cleaning the laser and surrounding areas. And as magic would have it, it worked again.
He has a furnace filter cut-to-fit on the front of the G5 now and no more probs.
Large volume low velocity airflow and no filter, man Apple turned a blind eye to that one.
