Re: Transpose an MP3
I had to do this same thing yesterday. DP didn't cope very well. I ended up using Melodyne which was much better for transposing a whole mp3 mix. I have heard some people praise the apple pitch shift audio unit plug that you will already have installed...
Otherwise you could download the trial version of Reaper which apparently has licensed a very good pitch shift algorithm.
Good Luck!

I, too need to transpose individual mono tracks for a project up a step. I downloaded Reaper, but I still get that "garbly" sound on sustained piano and I did try different parameters and pitch shift algorithms.
I also downloaded the demo of Melodyne Studio and it seems to be better and clearer.
On occasion, I also need to transpose an entire stereo mix either up or down.
Any other apps or plugs come to mind for transposition and time manipulation or is Melodyne the go-to for this?
Thanks!
Buzzy
EDIT: Just tried the Apple AUPitch (I forget about these Apple plugs), and it actually sounded pretty decent on mono tracks. I might be able to make this work, but I'd still be interested in your comments.

Re: Transpose an MP3
I can't help but wonder if transposing an MP3 is going to sound worse than if one had access to the original lossless file?

In my case, they are not MP3s. Just regular DP audio.
Mono and some stereo.
Thanks...

Re: Transpose an MP3
If you're dealing with 320k mp3s, there should be less of an issue with quality. But we all know that a 320k mp3 is fairly rare for as decent as it is.James Steele wrote:I can't help but wonder if transposing an MP3 is going to sound worse than if one had access to the original lossless file?
Generally speaking, in this day an age of "faster-smaller-easier", doing a serious project centered around an mp3 format could create as many problems as it solves.
There are sites like yousendit which will let you upload/download up to 100MB for free. With that kind of service out there, it's better to send an AIF or BWAV for audio files 44.1 less than 10 minutes long.

Re: Transpose an MP3
Polyphonic material doesn't do too well regardless what you use... especially an MP3. Try a raw format, your result will be better by far.spencer4t wrote:Is there a way to drop an audio file down like 1 whole step? I tried the transpose function but it didnt sound too hotThanks

The only thing that bothers me in my, admittedly, limited use of AUPitch is the formants.Dwetmaster wrote:Apple pitch is the way to go
