MachFive2 suddenly can't play GB Instruments or Apple Loops

Post by doctormelodious »

As always, in the "Load Preset" window under Favorites, there are two items which cannot be modified or deleted. They are "Apple Loops" and "Garage Band Instruments." I used to be able to use anything from these two libraries. But suddenly I get errors no matter what I select from them.

If it's a Garage Band Instrument, I get "Sample Not Found" for every sample in the instrument. And the file path shown for every one of them starts with $/Volumes/Macintosh HD. So that explains why MF2 can't find them. My boot drive hasn't been named that since right after I bought the machine.

I am able to do a "Find All Missing Samples" and manually point MachFive2 to the samples, but what a pain! I can't possibly do that for everything in the Garage Band library.

In the case of Apple Loops, I get "INVALID PROGRAM. Couldn't load preset file 'BlahBlahBlah.caf'" I verify that the file does indeed exist. With these, there's not even the option to try to find something. It just fails. I tried copying the entire /Library/Audio/Apple Loops folder into the external HD that I use for streaming my MF2 sounds, and then navigating to the copied folder from within MF2 and choosing a loop. No dice. "INVALID PROGRAM"

So there are really two problems here:
  • MF2 is looking to a non-existent HD for GB sounds
Apple Loops just no longer work at all
Has anyone else encountered these issues?? I don't know what brought them on. One of the OS X security updates I've done recently, maybe??

This problem happens whether I'm running MF2 as a plug-in in DP7.1 or as a standalone.

Thanks!

Not being able to play GB instruments or Apple Loops is a feature in MachFive... LOL!

Apple Loops:
MachFive can read .aif Apple Loops, but not .caf Apple Loops. You can use the (free) UVI Workstation plug-in to load .caf Apple Loops.

GarageBand instruments:
Are actually EXS24 files, which store their file paths as absolute paths. To get the instrument files to update their paths to the correct paths on your particular machine, just open them once in GarageBand (or Logic, if you have it); on the first load, they'll find the proper path and save it the instrument file. The next time you load the instrument preset in MachFive, it shouldn't report any missing samples.

Thanks for the reply, carry. I'm puzzled by this, though. If MachFive can't read .caf Apple Loops, then why are they the only Apple Loops that show up in MachFive when I navigate to the "iLike Sound Effects" folder, within the "Apple Loops" folder which is hard-wired into MachFive under "Favorites"?

I'll grab the UVI Workstation plug-in. Thanks for the tip!

That hard-wired favorite location simply points to the global Apple Loops folder. At the time this version of MachFive was released, that location contained .aiff Apple Loops; since then, Apple has switched to using .caf Apple Loops.
