Flag the notorious, unrepentant San Diego Reason pirate!

Post by James Steele »

Here he is... Giving his phone number and everything. Proving sadly that there are no consequences for offering pirated software openly and notoriously on Craigslist.

The problem with the BSA, is that they usually only target businesses and other legitimate entities with assets and money. Although this at least makes some sense, as these are the people that really make the difference as far as the damage piracy causes, as opposed to kids who are just collecting to show off-they're actually kind of bullies. They targeted my job (actually, everyone on our street just about), and they attack with the tactic that people will settle rather than dig up proof for every single software license on every machine and spend money defending it in court. I got the the feeling, even, that they were banking to a degree that most people don't keep meticulous records, especially for machines with bundled software, etc. Fortunately I throw nothing away, ever. Still, we had to dole out for our attorney to send a response with all our license documentation stating that any further verification they wanted to discuss with us would come with a counter claim for our time. Worse, the low income day care center across the street had to get rid of all the computers people had donated over the years for the kids to play on as they had no documentation with them. The BSA isn't a law enforcement agency (of course neither are we, but we still gang up on pirates) - they're just a bunch of lawyers who found a niche to exploit and I felt, when dealing with them, less like I was dealing with a reputable trade organization, and more like I was dealing with AFNI or any one of those junk debt collection agencies that attempt to scare people into paying debts that aren't theirs, or are decades past the statue of limitations.

I'd just point out that this guy isn't a kid sharing software but from the email I exchanged with him posing as a customer, he's an adult actually attempting to make a business out of selling pirated software on craigslist. This isn't a kid filling up his hard drive but an illegal for profit enterprise.

Actually, I agree you dead on about that guy's MO, and more that the people responding to his ads are part of the segment doing damage to the industry. It's these people the BSA or Law enforcement SHOULD be targeting with prejudice, but don't seem to be.
