Freezing V-Racks

Post by cxi2001 »

I've entered the world of V-Racks, so far so good.
Am i being a loon...how do i freeze said tracks ?
I have my MIDI tracks on the Tracking window, but no Omnisphere instrument to freeze with.
The V-Rack appears in the Mixer and Chunks window.
Or am i missing something fundamental ?

You cannot freeze with a Vrack. You have to change the output of the instrument in the Vrack to one of the busses and create a track in the sequence receiving input from that bus.
Hardware
Mac Pro 2014 6 core 3.5ghz, 1 TB Internal PCI-SSD HD, 64gb RAM, Focusrite Sapphire Pro 14, OSX 10.9.2, BlackMagic Multidock II (3) SSD's.

Software
Digital Performer 8, Hollywood Brass & Woodwinds, LA Scoring Strings, EWQLSO Platinum Plus, Komplete 9, Omnisphere, Trillian, SD2, Evolve Mutations 1 & 2, Vienna Ensemble Pro

When setting up a V-Rack, ALWAYS make the output a bus. With that bus, you bring the audio into your sequence or mix by way of an Aux track. The rest is pretty straightforward and understandable.

Many VI's are automatable, some not, to the extent of volume and pan. Some will recognize other information, too. That's up to the VI maker. But I prefer to do my automation of pan and volume at the Aux track where it enters my mix, not in the VI itself over in the V-Rack.

Thanks for that, am making progress !
Two more things :
How do i activate Omnisphere when there's no VI track on the sequence window to double click?
The audio is coming through to the Aux track but appears to be overloading creating distortion - the Aux track looks to be quite lower in volume than the master fader which is peaking.

I don't know if this will help your particular situation, but I've noticed that pretty much every VI I use (Trillian, BFD2, Stylus RMX, etc.) defaults to a high output level.

Each will show clipping at the fader, so I place a CC 7 of 92 or so for each MIDI channel to avoid this. (automation enabled, of course, on the MIDI tracks)

Just out of curiosity, do you tend to assign different busses to each VI in the V-Rack, or do you prefer to use one bus and then solo individual tracks when you want to print them to audio?

When the V-Rack allows multiple outputs, I do a different bus for each output. Some of my VI's, such as Wallander's WIVI, use outputs in a different way, so I just have to print one track at a time. On the positive side, you can mix a song totally within WIVI, and you only really need a single output pair. It's a very different sort of VI.

Nobody? OK, I will...

DP 6 manual, pp 730, 2nd paragraph, right hand side of the page. Let me know if there is something in there that you don't get... be specific.

Ok got that...hit V-Rack Edit and i get an empty screen in the Mixer?
It definitely exists, as i have 3 tracks playing from it.
The only place i find anything relevant to it is in the Chunks screen.

Double-clicking on the name V-Rack in your Chunks Window will change the Mixer to show the V-Rack. You can also selected "V-Rack" at the top right of the Mixing Window, or by pressing the "V" at the bottom left... although this last one may have just been added again in DP7, because I believe it was removed in DP6.

Sounds like they have not been added to the sequence. Can you add any from there? Also, check the view box on the (almost) bottom left of the window and make sure your seeing all there is to see in v-rack mixer section - just like showing and hiding tracks, I believe. Haven't looked at that in a while as I use Plogue Bidule for my VIs. Takes a lot of pressure off DP in my "grumpy old" system LOL!
