Multi-Computer Set-up

Post by admultosanos »

Hello! I just finished a bit of an epic job, and DP got slightly panicked by the amount of things going on at once (I wasn't being silly with things, it's just quite a big library which doesn't like the pre-processing thing in DP6 and reasonably complex parts). I've heard about people having multi-computer set-ups, where a second computer (in this case a generic Intel PC with Windows) has been used for VI processing, and slaved to Mac (in this case a Mac Pro), andI was just wondering if anyone's had any luck doing this, and how they went about it? Do I need a sequencer on the PC, or can I open the libraries in stand-alone mode? Also do I need a piece of kit (for the sends like the MOTU Micro-Lite)? Also, is it something that's worthwhile doing, stable and easy to use while working?

.

I use a multiple-PC thing for this, and it works great, even taking into account that they are PCs

Each PC has a card with TDIF and 2 MIDI ports. The TDIFF goes to my Tascam Mixer (8 stereo channels per cable), and each PC gets 32 MIDI channels. Those go to my MTP.

As far as DP is concerned, the PCs are just an external synth. And this is the ONLY way I could load those VSL libraries using my old G5. So they do all the hard work until I print to audio every track... then it becomes DP's and the G5's duty to run them and process them.

Check out the Vienna Ensemble PRO. You can get all that with a simple LAN cable.

The PCs I have are very old by now, so a slave MacPro with fast disks could suffice (depending on what you load). I recently quoted a new "big" PC for this, but the prices were not much cheaper than a fully blown Mac, so I decided to wait for the new Mac Pros for this. I really don't want to deal with PCs anymore, so if you don't like them either, take that into account.
Mac Mini Server i7 2.66 GHs/16 GB RAM / OSX 10.14 / DP 9.52
Tascam DM-24, MOTU Track 16, all Spectrasonics' stuff,
Vienna Instruments SUPER PACKAGE, Waves Mercury, slaved iMac and Mac Minis running VEP 7, etc.
