Optimal setup for DP7.1, MTP-AV, PCI424/2408 and PPC G5?

Post by thesoundsmith »

I just upgraded from 4.61 on OSX 4 to OSX 5 and DP7.1. It is all working just fine, but seems to be straining for some things that used to not be a problem. I have searched for, but can't find,a thread about optimizing the PPC G5 and OSX Leopard. Would someone please point me to it/them? It has been a long time since I have modded the system (DP 4.61 was totally stable on my machine and I did NOT want to change...) and I have forgotten the process (also can't find how to simply 'throw away the Preferences file' like we used to do.)

Thanks.

There is very little to do. Do usual OSX maintenance work which is described in detail at

Other than that, turn off things like Dashboard, remove your audio drives from Spotlight, turn of unnecessary networking, etc.

The more difficult part is making sure the specific versions of driver, plugs, etc all play together nicely. E.g., a number of people noticed that you may be better off with 10.4.11 on a G5 with some configurations of DP. Looks like you already managed to do that with your old setup on DP V4.

Fear of excess overhead in LEO combined with stable performance has kept me at OS 4.11 (Tiger), which is working great with DP7.02 on my G5 Quad. I plan to move to 7.1 ASAP.

Although I cannot back the "OS overhead" statement up with any objective data gathered on a G5, I can tell you that when I moved my G4 iBook to Leo, the machine slowed dramatically, leading me to believe Leo consumed more system resources than Tiger. I expect your apparent decrease in performance is caused by your changing OS more than upgrading DP.

I do run Leo on my G5, but on a separate start up partition used for non-audio work.

Thanks, guys. Since my G3 and OSX 3-something, approx. I have not had a stable system for years until the G5 and DP 4.61. The only reason I upgraded was to use Spectrasonics new updates. But the actual OSX 10.5 and DP 7.1 upgrades have gone pretty painlessly. I just need to be sure I haven't missed some significant OS tweak that Apple defaults the wrong way, or DP requires.

Like updating WAVES Gold - WUPs, there goes another money tree plant...

But I never remember where to find the new PREFs equivalences - the User folders, which I never think about... and I remember there used to be a page with great links to the system tweaks.

But this: "turn off things like Dashboard, remove your audio drives from Spotlight, turn of unnecessary networking, etc. " is exactly what I am talking about. That's the stuff I am currently unaware of (or just have forgotten,) last time I went into the OS in depth was OS9...
