Is my 2408 mk3 dying

Post by drosspunter »

Since the new drivers came out, my 2408 mk3 has been working flawlessly. So much so that I was considering rocking the boat by updating my now antiquated computer.

Last night I got home and fired up the Motu and noticed the input lights on channels 2 and 8 were lit at -42db. I uplugged the preamps and the lights stayed lit. I listed to it through cuemix and heard digital distortion.

I unplugged all the ins and outs, reinstalled drivers, switched pci slots(it's the 424x card) all to no avail. Throughout the troubleshooting process channels 4 and 6 had the same distortion, but are now quiet, though seemingly this was unconnected to anything I did troubleshooting wise. Notice all the effected channels are the even channels.

Has anyone experienced this. I wonder if something in the unit is just worn out.

My system is:

AMD dual core 2.4
ASUS Mobo
2 gigs ram
Vista(Virtual Instant Surveillance Tactical Application) 64bit SP2

I use various dbx and peavey preamps and a presonus digimax d8 through the b bank ADAT input on the 2408 mk III. Running at 44.1.

Thanks,
Damon

Disconnect the AudioWire cable from the back panel of the 2408mk3, and set it up in the standalone A/D conversion mode. Make sure that the clock source is set to internal. Now listen to the analog outputs. Do you hear the same noise? If not, then the 2408mk3 itself is probably fine, and the noise may have been caused by the PCI-424 card or by something happening on the computer.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I tried switching to stand alone mode, which is something I hadn't done yet. I did still hear the distortion.

Maybe I'll have to open the unit up and see if I can find anything burnt.

After opening up the box, all I can tell is that the distortion is warbling in the same rhythm as the power transformer is buzzing. The buzzing of the unit is not new. I don't know if it always buzzed, but it has for a while. Previously the input and output was clean.

One other weird thing is when I press the select button and the 424 is the clock source the distortion is less when the meter view is selected.
