Which Version of Windows for VE Pro?

Post by Anthropy »

I'm about to have delivered a new Rok Box music computer with a quad i7 processor. It comes with Windows 7 Pro 32-bit with Windows XP Pro installed. Since I'll presumably need a 64 bit operating system (using 12GB RAM), what's the best way to either use what I've got or upgrade to what I need? Would XP Pro be 64 bit?

Also - are there tweaks I should be made aware of?

Sorry if this is too obvious - Windows is kinda new to me.

Where's the best place to ask this question?
Mac Studio M1 128gb, Sonoma DP 11.33, LPX, OWC Thunderbay external 4 bay SSD, Antelope Audio Zen Go, Presonus Monitor Station V2, Event 2020 powered monitors (1st gen). Best thing = CyberPower UPS!!! We have wind, rain, snow, ice, and lots of power outages!

You have probably come to the best place in this forum.

Perhaps there are not many people around atm who feel qualified to answer your question? You are asking for experience with XP and 7, 32 and 64 bit. Many users such as myself are on Vista. 64 bit home premium in my case. ASUS P6T deluxe, Vn2 i7-920, 6Gb triple channel DDR3 CAS 8.

So. Just shooting breeze and being sociable.

32 bit XP SP3 is probably your safest bet. MOTU like many other developers these days tend to use their customers as beta testers and 32 bit XP has been around long enough to have had the most work done on it. If something doesn't work on an old XP laptap it's probably never going to work.

64 bit 7 is the obvious way to go for the future but it will be a long time before XP is superseded. I don't personally know of any outstanding issues regarding 64 bit operation vs 32 bit. I do know of an issue with modern USB 2.0 controllers but it doesn't appear to be OS related.

What you could do in your situation since you have been provided with both XP and 7 is set your PC up dual boot. You will need to check that dual boot on separate 32 bit and 64 bit partitions is technically possible. Don't know offhand. If it is go 32 XP and 64 7.

That's potentially clunky though so I'd just whack on 64 bit Windows 7 and deal with any issues if and when.

here is a useful list of tweaks for XP. http://www.tarekith.com/assets/XPTweaks.htm

If you come across something comparable for Vista/7 please let us know.

Hope that helps. R0N
