dragging MIDI and controller data at the same time

Post by Stuartfox »

OK - another seemingly dumb question, but when I drag selections of notes from the MIDI view, any controller data, volumes, mod, etc does not come with it - I thought that moving the data in the tracks view would move everything but I just tried this and the volume and mod data did not move with the MIDI note data.

Is there a way to tell DP to move everything on that MIDI track when I move note events in the MIDI view?

Cheers,

Stu

Select the region, not just the notes. Do this from the top of the window where the time line (measures, real time, etc) are displayed and NOT from within the window containing the MIDI notes.

The method to which I'm going to link you has been called "over the top" or "unnecessarily complicated," but I use it dozens of times a day, and can say that it works so fast and easily, once you get used to the keys, that I'd be lost without it.

Working with MIDI Selections in the Graphic Editor.

You can ignore it or try it. It requires customizing a couple of commands, but in the end, it's a fast method of selecting notes with their controllers. When you use a WX-5 (MIDI Wind Controller) as I do, and you always have at least two continuous streams of MIDI data in addition to the notes, it is essential to have a method of selecting them easily and efficiently. This enables you to select the data for a single track, from the Graphic Editor, and leave notes in other tracks alone. Selecting by region works, but it gets all the tracks unless you want to hide the other tracks in the Graphic Editor Window. I work with all tracks overlaid, so that I can see everything. When I select some notes, even to nudge them a few tics forward or backward, I need a quick way of grabbing their relevant controller data without touching the other tracks. This works. VERY well.

Thanks a lot Shooshie..... in my old sequencer there was a setting for this that I could simply turn on and I'm slightly surprised there's not one in DP... but this looks like it will come in handy.

There should be a way to do it in DP. I guess I proved that there IS a way, but it required some customization of the Commands Window. What I like about my way is that I can easily grab the one or two control points that usually lie outside the bounds of the notes themselves. With Breath Control, the first zero marker is almost always always before the note begins, and the last one is often after the end of the note. Just a slight change of fingers grabs those for you.

One can set it up any way they want to. It doesn't have to be the way I did it, but the important thing is to be able to do it. When I'm working on individual notes, I don't always want to be carefully trying to select the range that includes those control points. That's just too tedious. If someone were watching me do it today, they wouldn't even see it happen. They'd just notice that suddenly all the control points for those notes had been selected. It happens in a fraction of a second.

I think some people are using it, but I have no idea how many. I only remember that initially a few people told me (and not in a polite way) that I was making things way too complicated. Which only means that they didn't try it. Had they tried it, they'd have loved it.
