Motu 896HD and airport problem on macbook pro

Post by felipus »

Hi there, I have a Macbook Pro 4,1 Core 2 Duo 2.5Ghz 4 Gigs of RAM and 250GB HDD. Running Snow Leopard 10.6.2, and the latest MOTU drivers.

I don't have problems with the Motu hardware, it runs great with logic, 9.1.0, no problems there.

But today, I was showing some of my recordings to a couple of friends and I needed to access another mac on my network to get some files to play.

I couldn't. I know that I should turn off airport to avoid certain problems, but I never needed to do that on the old iMac running Leopard 10.5.8. I could be listening to some songs on iTunes while browsing the web, using the 896HD.

Well, after rebooting everything from the computer to the Motu and the router, I still had problems. Then, I turned off the 896HD and the airport was working again! Turn on the 896HD and there was no LAN or internet access. I can do this over and over again. If the 896HD is on, and I open firefox it says "resolving host", if I turn off the 896HD the page loads in less than a second.

I don't know if this is an issue with Snow leopard, or of it' an MBP problem or configuration.

I'm curious about this, since I also have a network drive that I sometimes need to access to get some sound efects and stuff.

Ethernet works with the Motu turned on connected to the iMac as a Logic Node.

Any thoughts?

Does the problem happen if you use a different FireWire device instead of the 896HD? Maybe there's a problem with the computer's logic board.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.

I'll try with a presonus firebox later to see if it works.
I'll post as soon as I get back home.
Thanks!

Thanks 1nput0utput, I tried the Presonus Firebox with another cable and everything's ok.
The same cable with the Motu and again, no network via airport.

I tried with Firewire HDD, DV camera, another mac in firewire target disk mode, and all ok. No problems at all.

I don't know why this is happening, but the macbook pro doesn't seem to have problems with other firewire devices, just this issue with the Motu.

In any case, as I said on my first post, the Motu works great, even if I have network problems, no dropouts, noises or performance issues, but I think this airport issue is not "normal".

It seems like the mac is trying to connect to the network via the 896HD, or something like that.

Can anyone reproduce this?
Thanks!

Edit:
I don't know if this is useful, but I found this on my logs.
With the Motu turned off:
18/02/10 22:17:24 kernel AirPort: Link Up on en1
18/02/10 22:17:25 kernel AirPort: RSN handshake complete on en1
With the Motu turned on:
18/02/10 22:21:11 kernel AirPort: Link Down on en1. Reason 2 (Previous authentication no longer valid).
18/02/10 22:21:33 kernel AirPort: Link Up on en1
18/02/10 22:21:46 kernel AirPort: Link Down on en1. Reason 6 (Frame received from nonauthenticated STA).
18/02/10 22:21:56 kernel AirPort: Link Up on en1
18/02/10 22:22:10 kernel AirPort: Link Down on en1. Reason 6 (Frame received from nonauthenticated STA).
With the Motu turned off again:
18/02/10 22:22:35 kernel AirPort: Link Up on en1
18/02/10 22:22:38 kernel AirPort: RSN handshake complete on en1

What do you think?

have you checked the state of your network (in system prefs) when the motu is connected.....it should state that no network capable firewire devices are connected ....this just to rule out the firewire trying to connect the internet........could be a snow leopard/latest MOTU driver related problem though, I use the airport with ipmidi to run redundant machines and to send MIDI timecode in 10.5.8 and it works really well, never had any problems in hundreds of live shows over the last couple of year??!! ......
