working for a theather play. Need help

Post by Nama »

Hi,

I'm working with a 15 acters as a sound man. The theater is small, but they want to make sure all people can hear them, so I was asked to amplify them just a little bit.

It is kind of emergency, so I haven't been to the space. but they say the capacity is like 300 people, and the stage length is 25 feet.

What would be the best thing to do, would you think?
Would just a stereo mike on the stage help?

I would really appreciate your input!

Best, :)

I've done a lot of sound reinforcement for theater.
The best thing to do is use an XY stereo configuration on the far left and right of the stage (try to use a matched pair of mic's). If you place the mic's on the floor in front, you will most likely pick up too much feet movement (especially if it is a wood floor). So, put the mic's at a level where you will pick up mostly voice (between 4 and 6 feet above the ground on boom stands). Give yourself a lot of headroom on the levels, especially if there are quite and loud parts in the play (a compressor would be ideal to control the level).
Lastly, if you have the mic's and the inputs, place a few mic's around main meeting points on the stage. You can hide them on tables, behind picture frams, books, pianos, etc. these will help pick up individuals and fill in the overall sound.
remember this, actors should be able to fill a space that big with their voices unamplified, so go easy on the output level.
hope this helps
