DP7 MIDI notes skipping, jumping, etc...

No, I could not reproduce the bug. But after about 50 tries in rapid succession, I finally crashed DP 7.1 for the first time.

Bear in mind that just hitting Enter won't do the trick. When you type in a location, like bar 5, you have to hit the Enter key to make it take the location. Then you have to hit Enter again to go into Wait stage, then you have to hit Enter a third time to make it actually play.

That's 3 strikes on the Enter key to make it play. I was using piano triple-strike technique on the enter key, so I had this thing starting at a new measure every second or less. After doing that for quite some time, I finally got a beach ball and DP quit. I hope I didn't break it!

But no, I could not get it to reproduce your problem. I recorded a number of tracks of drums in external MIDI, by the way.

And for what it's worth, they played back perfectly in time with the metronome, meaning that DP 7.1 does not have a problem with external MIDI timing, as someone else is wondering in another thread.

So, DP 7.1 seems to be working as expected on my system. That's good news, but I'm sorry it sheds no light on your current position.

Wow...Thanks Shooshie for taking the time to run the test...Just to double check...Did you follow all the steps? Like keeping Audio mode "ON", Wait for note "ON", etc? For some reason, I can recreate this problem almost every time...

I can't figure this thing out for the life of me...I swapped out the internal HD for a 7200rpm drive...Reinstalled the OS...Reinstalled everything...and it the problem still exists...Right now it just seems like it's something that I will have to live with...Unless someone miraculously comes up with a solution...

Right now, I'm just programming MIDI in MIDI Only Mode...which helps with the problem...I just bought MachiFive2...which means I will have the Audio Mode back on...ugh...

Yes, I did it exactly as you described it. I checked back to your post with the list several times, just to make sure I got it right.

Hey, something's going on there. It DID crash. But it never misplaced a note that I could tell. (Maybe it put them in time with other notes?)

I have had some of these issues for years and have never figured them out. I very often get first note missing, and almost everyday experience stuck notes. This has gone on thru new computers and OS versions, DP version from 4.o on, etc

Let's see if we can identify a commonality in our systems. What are the external synths you have going into your MIDI interface? What is your controller? What other apps (non music) do you have running on your system?

I'm currently using the following...

1. Roland RS-9 for controller
2. MIDI Timepiece AV and XT for MIDI interface
3. External MIDI (Roland XV-5080, Akai S5000, Triton Rack, Motif Rack, Fantom Rack, JV-1080, JV-880, MPC5000, etc.) However, the MIDI problem exists even if I'm triggering just a single unit...
4. I'm not running any other music apps on this computer...

I've updated all drivers, firmware, etc.

we both have 5080s and tritons in our rack. Now I have tried turning them off in various combinations to see if one is the culprit but have not been successful. It could be that just by having one or more of a certain external synth attached and included in the audio MIDI setup window might be causing the problem.

It is definately not all DPs fault. Could be a core audio thing. I see posts about this kind of stuff on other platforms as well.

Maybe it is worth disconnecting various synths and deleting them from the set up entirely and seeing how that affects things.

Have you tried disconnecting and deleting all external synths in the Mac Audio MIDI setup except maybe 1 synth and running it? I want to try just hooking up my Akai S5000 sampler as the only external MIDI device and see if that eliminates the problem.

I agree that even if other external devices are not turned on...It may still affect the Audio MIDI setup if it's connected virtually. Hmmm...I think we may be on to something...

I did a test with a former MOTU consultant a year or so back and I think we disconnected everything except for a emu proteus 2 and played back a simple flute line-which proceeded to have stuck note issues.

But I still think it has something to do with that audio/MIDI setup. It has to!! I have tried every other possible suggestion people have made over the years

Right now I am using DP6.03 on a Leopard system. But I have DP 7 and snow leopard waiting on another drive to start using, so maybe that combination will magically solve my problems!

Yesterday I tried using audio tracks for the first time...I loaded in 2 tracks...1 acoustic guitar track and 1 vocal track to do a MIDI arrangement...and I had notes skipping, jumping, and flying around all over the place...This is ridiculous...

Yesterday on my macbook I went into System Profiler and selected "Application" and the dreaded "spinning beachball of death" appeared...I shut down and rebooted the computer few times...same thing...So I took it to the local Apple store...and they told me there's nothing they can do cuz all hardware test indicates no hardware problems...I thought maybe there's something wrong with my RAM...so I pulled out the 2 RAM cards and switched the slots...and rebooted...and no more beachball!!! So I thought maybe that was what caused the whole MIDI note skip, etc...so I immediately ran DP7.1...and the problem was still there...&#%@!!!

Anyways, as I was mentioning...I was doing an arrangement with 2 audio tracks...and MIDI notes were flying all over the place...also stuck notes back to back to back!!! Even when I use the "Panic" on DP7 the notes will remain stuck...FRUSTRATING!!!

Last night after many redials...I finally got to talk to tech support from MOTU...It was a 40 minute international call on my cell phone half way around the globe...which probably cost me over $100. Anyways, after running bunch of tests with MIDI Timepiece, Clockworks, etc. (Running a single cable from MIDI out directly into MIDI in within MTP AV, etc.) We thought we found a solution...when we disconnected all connections within Clockworks...So we hung up...After we hung up I ran the physical MIDI cable back into my external MIDI unit...and guess what...the same problem persisted...

Guess another night of long distance cell phone call is due...ugh...

Although tech support can solve many issues, I would not waste any more phone time and money trying to get them to solve this problem. They do not have a solution. They have a bunch of procedures to try and that's it. Maybe one day they will say- "Yes, here is how to stop having hanging notes!" But until then, sorry, they will not be able to help you.

This is probably the most incidious bug in the whole Mac OSX universe. For me it all satred with OSX/ I kept OS9 around way longer than I should have becuase I NEVER got hanging notes in OS9. But from day 1, OSX has caused me hanging notes, random notes, etc.

I would pay someone lots of money to fix this forever!

I just don't understand why other people haven't experienced this bug. I had this thread going for a while already and no one else has posted similar experience. Shooshie said he tried the procedure over and over many times and couldn't reproduce the bug on his setup...

I can reproduce this bug almost every time...It's weird that it only has problems when the "Wait for note" function is ON. Strange strange strange...

Other people have. There are many folks who are constantly using command 1 all the time.
But for some, it was a problem that just stopped happening at some point, and they can't really explain why.
