Cuemix FX with 2 Firewire devices

Post by mandobilly64 »

I'm wondering how this works, lets say I have 2 Motu 828 Mk3s hooked up via firewire to each other, will I be able to control inputs to both of these in my Cuemix FX panel? or will there need to be a seperate Cuemix FX panel open for each devices?
If anyone is using 2 firewire devices at the same time, I would love to know.

Thanks,
Billy

I use an 896mk3 and an 8pre and they show up as their own separate windows in cuemix.

I'm not sure because I haven't dug deeply enough, but I don't think you can route the 8pre inputs to the 896's main outs. seeing as how they are different devices, and the 8pre has it's own main outs.

Personally I find it much less hassle to use the 2nd interface as a converter and plug it into the ADATs in the mk3. more stable, don't have to sync with firewire etc. and all your inputs show up as one device. Mind you if you're running 2 896's that might not work for you, but for me I just needed the extra 8 preamps, thats why I went with an 8pre instead of a 2nd 896.

After I got my MBP, my 828mkII wouldn't show up in MOTU Audio Setup, but my 8pre would. If I lightpipe the 828 into the 8pre I don't get all ten analog lines in from the 828. So, I put up with the two CueMix windows.

828mkII, 8Pre, Alesis M1 Active Mk2, Ext. FW drives, Yamaha fretless bass, Kay upright bass, Wechter acoustic/electric, trombone, baritone and a proclivity for polka music. (With sufficient quantities of beer) and I play country music.

Interesting, the reason I ask is because I have an Octopre running into the ADAT inputs right now and want to have to capability of recording at high sample rates. Right now I can do 18 tracks, not counting if I used the SPDIF inputs but if I was to add an 8pre via Firewire then I could get 8 more tracks and at 96 Khz, if I wanted to or was requested.
So it's sounds like the trickiest part would be the monitor mixes for the extra 8 tracks from the 8 pre.
Hmmmm, I'll have to really think about this before buying.
Thanks,

Yeah, that was what I liked about my previous configuration. 8pre lightpiped into the 828, 18 analog in and only one CueMix window. However, at higher sample rates, the ADAT input count drops by half. :(
