looking for cheap active starter studio monitors to "get me out of my cans"! Heard about the behringer TRUTH line (2 actives with 6.75 woofers for under 300 bucks). any advice?

i haven't heard the "truth" monitors but i have heard the m-audio bx-8's and they sound great for their price point...around $450.00/pair. i was not impressed by the smaller bx-5 monitors though.

don't go too cheap on your monitors...

What you try to save now you may spend two or three times until you find out that you can't scrimp on monitors. Do it right the first time and save money in the long run. Look around, ask others, there are fine moniters to be had even if you can't drop into the Genelec thing. Honest monitors that you can trust are a must! Oh and... slowly...carefully... step away from the Behringers. Take a deep breath, now move on :)

There seems to be a decent supply of used Event 20/20bas monitors out there-- I switched to them for not much more than the cost of the Behringers and immediately became aware of problems in my previous mixes that I had done on a set of Yorkville YSM-1's . . . .

I use Event 20/20 bas and am really happy with them for the price. It was as much as i could afford. I have done pretty good mixes with them. i have learned to hear out of them in order to get a mix that sounds good in car stereos, home etc. they have a good solid feel to them and I believe it is a pretty good flat sound.
I know there are better monitors out there of course but I had to get the best that I could get for the money.

I've got Genelec 1029a's at work and i'm not overly keen on them. I have Tapco S5's at home (mackie under a different brand name) and they sound better than the Genelecs to my ears (less harsh and more open sounding) and they are half the price of the Genelecs.

Hi,
i‘m quite happy with my Absolute 4P. Just paid about 500 •‚¬ for a pair of new ones as a special deal here in germany. One really important thing about your monitors is the placement and envirenment. And of course you have to know them. So try to listen as much music as you can at your studio.
Cheap monitors will always have some problems at specific freq...
Friend of mine is also happy with his Event 8, they got a new line out, so maybe you can get a good price for the old ones...
Good Luck, Good SOUND !!!

Excuse my bad english. I´m just a german.

I own a pair of DS-50A monitors. Small but very tight. Investing in monitors is crucial, i believe it is the most important thing in a studio...

20/20bas (Event) here, had 'em for years and love 'em. If you can find a good pair cheap, go for it.

I second the notion that spending the extra bucks for good monitors is well worth it. Think of 'em as your ears - would you want a pair of so-so, cheap ears? And personally, I've regretted buying cheap equipment on a couple of occasions, but I've never regretted saving the bucks and buying the good stuff.

The last thing I'd recommend is take some cd's with you. Take some commercial ones you know and love, and that have a wide frequency response and dynamic levels. Also, if you have some of your own mixes take them, too, and hear 'em on the different monitors. Nothing beats listening to determine your best choice.

Good luck!

Monitor selection.... That is the all time question.

I spent 10 grand on Monroe/Dynaudio MA1's midfield's and don't really have enough room for them but the accuracy is astounding.

but I think for a CHEAP nearfield system the M-audio BX-8 is the best bang for the buck. I tried Rockit's but found the top end wasn't as robust as the woofer tone and didn't keep up with it although the low end socked nicely. They were priced fairly.

For nearfields around a grand the Mackie 824's were fair but you fatigue after long usage.

For around three grand+ the Genelec 1031s are a very good monitor and possibly one o the best.

Also the Dynaudio 15's are quite good. Have not heard the air 20's yet.

Good luck.

I normally avoid everything m-audio at all costs, but before I knew I should, I needed some cheap monitors and bought m-audio's LX4's. they cost about $250, and so far I don't have any complaints. I'm perfectly happy with them. Of course, I do live in an apartment and have to keep control over my sound level, so if i had to blast music from them I can't say I'd still be happy with them. But as it is, I never have had to do that, and so don't know if they would hold up under such a situation.
But they are a cheap solution and have extremely good sound for the money.
