slave computer & DP6
For some time now I've been using DP6 on my old G4 PB, doing mostly audio recording. All my stuff with MIDI I've been doing on my pc with Sonar 8.3.1. I've got some stuff in DP that could use a few of the softsynths I have on my Sonar machine. Currently I'm treating the Sonar machine as a slave to the DP Mac, using MIDI tracks in DP to drive the softsynths on the pc, and bringing the audio over to the Mac by way of the machines' respective audio interfaces.
Is there a cleaner way of doing this? Currently I'm treating things like the pc is a hardware synth (like my Moog Voyager or DSI PolyEvolver). I know I could install the softsynths (specifically I'm talking about Arturia's CS80, MMV and miniMoog and Sampletank2.5XL) on the Mac but I don't think the licenses will allow me to do that.

Thanks - I knew about VE Pro but the problem is I've had issues with dongles on my Windoze machine that haven't ocurred on my Mac. That makes me gun-shy about going that route, although I do love the concept by what VSL is doing. And at $315 it ain't cheap.FMiguelez wrote:.

Yes, it's not that cheap. But if you take into account that you don't need a hardware mixer, nor an audio interface, nor a MIDI interface, then it suddenly seems cheap!
I will have to pay $295 just for my PCIe card upgrade!
At the moment I have my PCs slaved like you do. They work fine (taking into account they are Windoze machines), but I can't complain.
I am actually going through a big change in my studio, and I will be using VE PRO, so let us see how it goes.
If your current setup works, why would you want to change? Just curious.

Re: slave computer & DP6
I have all the hardware needed so that's not a problem or expense. Just wondered if there was a cleaner, better way to do the job. Guess I'll stay with what I've got until I get my new MacPro after the taxes are done. I was going to wait for the Gulftown 6 core processors to be offered in Macs but it doesn't look like that's going to happen anytime soon.FMiguelez wrote:.

Same here! I thought they would mention something about the newest Mac Pros in today's big announcement, but they didn't.n2mpujack wrote:I was going to wait for the Gulftown 6 core processors to be offered in Macs but it doesn't look like that's going to happen anytime soon.
I really can't wait any longer, so I will pick up my new Mac next week (if they have it in stock by then).
Anyway, let's see if someone else chimes in. But I doubt there's something cleaner than VE Pro.

Re: slave computer & DP6
So, from what you're saying, VE Pro goes in my Intel mac and all I need is an ethernet cable to connect between it and my old G4? I won't need a MIDI or audio interface? And I can put my discontinued B4II on the old B4 running Tiger or Leopard?

Well, if VE Pro can be run on a G4, and VE Pro can load the B4, then yes.midilance wrote:So, from what you're saying, VE Pro goes in my Intel mac and all I need is an ethernet cable to connect between it and my old G4? To be sure, I'd ask VSL people about this.

I'm in the same boat but unfortunately, for obvious or not so obvious reasons, if you need to use Ensemble to run VIs from a competitor of Vienna you are currently S.O.L That means any EastWest PLAY libraries or the newer Garritan stuff with the ARIA player. They don't work with Ensemble.
There is another one I can't remember. Check the Vienna site it's up there.
