CPU maxed out - mystery solved
[[ -- this post has been edited to avoid misleading you. -- ]]
I was mistaken about there being any File Import Bug. If you experience what looks like CPU overload when your project is idling and you don't know why it's happening, open the Background Processing preferences and check the box to "Show all processes." This will reveal the hidden processes that are maxing out your CPU. Once processes are finished, DP will return to normal.
It seems there is a bug in which the DP's CPU meter in the Audio Processing window does not accurately reflect the Background Processing. I've seen this in both 7.02 and 7.1. Mine was hovering around 10% while the Mac Activity Monitor showed that DP was taking 100% of resources to process the analysis files. It was scary.
The posts below that refer to an import bug are referring to my previous post in which I was thinking there was a bug with importing files that was causing the CPU overload.

Re: File Import Bug - FOUND!!
Thanks, songsmith, for your long explanation.
However I've never lost a single file importing to DP.

Re: File Import Bug - FOUND!!
I just pulled in about 40 files from a PT session without a problem in DP7.1.
I've done similar things in 7.02 back to DP5, without a problem.

All is well
Re: File Import Bug - FOUND!!
Who knows what the transcoder done to those exported files... Was the PT's on a PC by any chance?

Re: File Import Bug - FOUND!!
so basically it's taking forever to import?
when u say corrupts file - how do u mean? the file is FUBAR after inporting??
or u just having "fun" on import..
u might turn off the analysis on import? ( in prefs )
i had hangiing on import for some files... and video - ( 7.02 - 7.1)
but yes I hear ya - please please MOTU ask some of your friends to take a look at your err stuff before pulling your pants down in public?

I don't know if you're in the mood for more testing or not (doesn't sound like you are), but I would ask if the same problem occurs if you turn off Automatic Conversions and set the Audio File preferences to BWAV before you import? I'd also like to know if the problem occurs if you import AIF files.

I've never ever had DP corrupt a file on import since V4 (that wasn't already corrupted)
Free updates for life, eh

Re: File Import Bug - FOUND!!
I have ALWAYS set up DP to NOT analyze beats etc.... speeds up imports and if there's anything to analyze I'll pick when.martian wrote:

Man, there sure has been a lot of bashing going on lately!

Re: File Import Bug - FOUND!!
yeah me too -
I had some weirdness were DP was writing the tempo into a file - this seemed to be causing an issue..
actually for me DP6 is fine.. I think I'll wait a while..

Re: File Import Bug - FOUND!!
Well, Songsmith, I don't know if you've found a legitimate bug or if it's as some people suspect, just going into overdrive analyzing imported files. It'd be worthwhile to make sure that pref is set to something other than analyze immediately and try it again.
Either way, I DO appreciate the effort you've put into it, and I DO understand your frustration. Been there many times. But I also do know that MOTU inevitably gets these things ironed out, although it can take a while on some of the lesser anomalies. So, I'd write them a letter and send them what you've learned. Tell them (or send them) your preferences. They can't fix it if they can't reproduce it.

Don't you think that until someone else imports these files onto their DP rig and experiences the same issue that the 'bug' has only been found on your own computer?

Good job, SongSmith... bravo!songsmith wrote:After I don't know how many hours of unpaid testing... maybe 10 or 20 hours? I found the bug that has been killing my system and maybe yours. Since MOTU has been completely absent through this process I think MOTU owes me free updates for life, except that I'm switching to another DAW that is actually supported by it's developer, so they won't do me any good.
For all you poor saps still planning to keep working with this buggy POS, here is the bug I found.
Why do you take the time to post all that, if your opening paragraph is an INSULT to the rest of us?
Sorry you are having trouble, but calling the software I use successfully EVERY day to make a living (and so many of us here) a "POS", and calling us "poor saps" won't make you any friends in this neighborhood.
And you want "free updates for life" because you are having some trouble?!?!?!? That is just asinine.
I'm actually surprised you got some answers from other members.
I suppose you will go to Logic or Cubase or Nuendo. Good luck! I am sure they are perfect and have no issues at all (just read through their boards...)
Nice attitude, BTW.

Audio File prefs were already set to BWAV.Dan Worley wrote:I don't know if you're in the mood for more testing or not (doesn't sound like you are), but I would ask if the same problem occurs if you turn off Automatic Conversions and set the Audio File preferences to BWAV before you import? When you write "turn off Automatic Conversions," do you mean in the Background Processing prefs the radio button: "Wait until DSP analysis is needed?" Just want to make sure that I'm looking at the same setting.

No insult intended. I'm just venting frustration (perhaps inappropriately). I wasted a lot of time dealing with this stuff.FMiguelez wrote:Why do you take the time to post all that, if your opening paragraph is an INSULT to the rest of us?
It was a joke that I bet a lot of other folks here can relate to, although given the amount of free beta testing hours I've put in for MOTU, I think I deserve to be paid probably more than I would need to spend to buy every update for the rest of my life. I'm just mad.FMiguelez wrote:And you want "free updates for life" because you are having some trouble?!?!?!? That is just asinine.

Does the same thing happen if you drag the files directly from your hardrive into an audio (Mono or Stereo) track in SE window?
