Quad core or 8 core

Post by curtingram »

Apple is replacing my G5. Do I want to spend the extra cash and get the 8 core?
AND WHY? (DP7 user)

I'd say get the biggest, baddest Mac you can afford. DP uses multi cores really well. I love my Quad G5, but if Apple would give ME a new Mac, I'd be all over it!

Your probably not going to like what I say but I wouldn't... I'd get the Quad and sit on it till the new ones come out and sell it and put the extra $300 into a 6 core. The entry level (6 core) Mac Pros are going to be faster than the present entry level 8 (dual quad) core models. Why spend the $800 when you can spend that on fast HD's and ram that you'll have to pay for anyway.... Look, your getting a machine that you can sell for top $$ compared to the G5 so your making out BIG TIME so just hang on to it till the new ones come out and sell it and throw some extra cash out for a new refurb Mac Pro 6 core... you WON'T be sorry! Why blow the $$ on an 8 core when you can get the new 6 core that will smoke it? Now video compression and rendering in the background things like that you'll benefit from with an 8 core but unless your doing jobs like that where you charge by the hour for rendering and all that... you don't need it... I haven't seen the out of DSP resources dialog on mine since I purchased it... but I use DSP cards and they really help.
It's almost February... their right around the corner and you can use the new one that Apples swapping out to you until then... it's going to be a huge difference from your G5.
Your in a win-win situation any way you look @ it but save that cash for the premium HD's and ram that you WILL benefit from.
