Just upgraded to DP7 - Need Help

Post by atfallen »

Hey all... long time DP user here and I just upgraded to DP7 from DP5.13 (Mac Pro 2x2.26 Quad Core Intel Xeon , 8GB RAM, 896HD, MIDI ExpressXT).

I'm having a bit of a problem here. This will be a little tough to explain so bear with me. Let's say I load up Omnisphere (this is also happening with Symphobia, VSL Chamber Strings, Stylus, EWQL Pianos, etc.). I'll load in, for example, a staccato choir patch. I'll record a part that goes Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah in quarter notes all on a "D note" (random choice - it doesn't matter what note). Now when I play that back all is good. When I quantize ATTACKS all is good. BUT if I quantize attacks AND releases only the FIRST "Ah" will play followed by 3 almost inaudible "Ah's". Same goes if I try "Change Note Duration". Understand? This happens with any patch I load and is slowing me down having to manually fix this stuff after every take. I never had this happen in DP 5.13.

Now check this out as this is what's blowing my mind:

After install of DP7 I checked out DP5.13 to make sure it was ok but to my surprise the problem occurred there too! I then flushed the AudioUnit Cache and restarted DP5.13 (rescanned audio units and gathered info) and then the problem did NOT occur. So, I thought "Cool, let's try DP7!" Started it up and scanned the audio units and gathered info again. BAM - problem returned. Rechecked DP5.13 and that went back to having a problem as well. I redid those steps more times than I'd like to admit to make sure that I wasn't going crazy. I definitely wasn't. I'm for sure going to call MOTU today to help me figure this madness out but I have to wait a little bit. In the meantime, I was just wondering if any of you folks could possibly have an idea what is causing this. It seems like preferences are changing for the plug-ins when DP7 is gathering info for them. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,

Mark

In the past few DP versions (perhaps since version 6.0), note on events that occur on the same tick as note off events for the same pitch are not being transmitted to virtual instrument plug-ins. Someone at MOTU told me that this is a side effect of fixing some other more serious problem. If the notes in a track have been quantized so that a note off occurs on the same tick as the next note of the same pitch, you should insert a Change Duration plug-in on the MIDI track and set it to subtract one tick from all notes. Then the note off events won't occur on the same ticks as the note off events, and you won't hear this problem.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.

Thank you very much for the reply. Yea, that makes sense. I guess as long as it took away a more serious problem then it is just something that must be dealt with.

Thanks again for your input! Much appreciated.

I was just curious... I've never heard a quantized choir in real life... the off timing makes it organic. I mean if it's late or early yes, it's off, but I try not to quantize as much as possible but that's me. Some things need that machine effect that quantizing gives but everyones different on how and when... choirs are usually a bit relaxed and loose.

Haha... of course not. I was just loading a random patch to illustrate a problem. Funny.

Cheers,

I was wondering about this. I always have to make sure (In Trilian, for example) that the durations of the same note repeated can't touch each other in the Graphic Editor Window.
IOW, and we'll use heavily quantized here, with 2 quarter notes of the same note, I have to make sure that the first note is 479 ticks or less to allow the second note to play.

Newrigel - I wish I could do that. I hear melodies but I can't sing 'em! lol...

Buzz, yea it was weird to me too because I never had to do that in DP5.13 and I was like, what the hell's goin' on here?!?! It was really messing up some piano parts bad. What 1nput said works great though. No big deal anymore. Thanks again.
